Charlotte was born to Mary and JR Pigeon in Kamloops, BC. She spent her early years on the family ranch at Meadow Lake. She then lived in Clinton where she attended school.
Charlotte met the love of her life when she was 12 years old. Charlotte’s mom told her that “Don Spooner sure is a nice young man” after he had stopped in at the family ranch. Obviously, Don thought she was a great gal as they started dating when she was 14 and they got married when Charlotte was 17 and Don was 21.
Charlotte and Don welcomed three children into their family – Mike (Sue), Doug (Tally), and Sheila (Ron). The family lived mainly in 16 Mile. Throughout the years, Charlotte and Don drove the kids to all their sporting events whether it be hockey, figure skating, majorettes, high school sports, fastball, or slo-pitch. Don was the biggest cheerleader as Charlotte was out on the field with her kids in slo-pitch tournaments or with Sheila in fastball tournaments. She had a very competitive nature which all her kids and grandkids inherited.
Charlotte spent many years working in the tourist industry. She worked at numerous fast-food restaurants. She is most well-known for “Inventing the DQ ice cream cake” with her sister Yvonne and being able to make a perfect DQ curl on her cones and sundaes.
Charlotte really shone in her new role as “Grammie.” They had five grandchildren – Eric (Kelsey), Madeleine (Ty), Brooklynn (Casey), Delaney (Jamie), and Sophie. Charlotte also had two great-granddaughters – Kensley and Klarke (Eric). To be honest, every child who visited always called her Grammie! It was the fun house… kids loved going there because Charlotte was a big kid herself and made everything fun. She no longer wanted the grown-ups around and just wanted the grandkids all to herself.
We lost Don on January 20, 2012. Charlotte taught us all how to be strong and to carry on. That same year, Charlotte moved to Kamloops to live with Ron and Sheila in their in-law suite. Charlotte quickly became involved with the Rockettes Curling Club, Kamloops Mixed Curling League, Japanese Nisei Curling League, and she played Senior Slo-Pitch where she was drafted by the “Coffin Dodgers.” Charlotte was always the life of the curling club and on the ball field. She adored having fans in the stands. She even played in the Senior Summer Games for slo-pitch.
Not only did she play sports with all these amazing new friends, but she volunteered as well. She started volunteering at the Royal Inland Hospital Thrift Store, the Special Olympics, the Kamloops Curling Club, and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Charlotte loved helping everyone!
Charlotte once again led the way showing strength when she was diagnosed with bile duct/pancreatic cancer in February 2023. She was resilient and faced her illness with an incredible amount of courage and grace. In her last year, Charlotte lived life to the fullest and made many special memories with friends and family.
Charlotte spent her remaining weeks at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House. She was in awe of the amazing care she received from her care team. I am sure she holds a record for number of visitors because she was so very loved by family, friends, and teammates. The family wishes to thank Dr. Justyne Morrow for her exceptional care.
Charlotte’s Celebration of Life is planned for January 12, 2024 at the Clinton Memorial Hall in Clinton, BC. 11:00 am start.
