June 4, 1933 to March 25, 2024
In his 91st year, Charles Wallis (Wally) King died peacefully in Toronto. Loved and loving husband of Marilyn June King for 64 years and father of Martha, Elizabeth (Eric Armour) and Graham (Virginia Gayford). He was an enthusiastic and adored Poppa for 7 grandchildren, Ainsley Coatsworth (Gord Coatsworth), Devon Bond (Chris Lamont) and Chandler Bond (David Prinzbach), Jessie Armour (Anthony Ponzo), Sascha Armour, Charlie King and Henry King, and in recent years welcomed 4 great-grandchildren, Owen, Mars, Taylor and Heath. Devoted brother to George Francis King (Carolyn) of Calgary and special uncle and mentor to Kirsten, Karin (Tim Cecil) and Craig (Jen).
Born in London, England, he was the proud and loving son of Air Commodore Charles Ley King, MC, DFC, AFC, RAF Rtd., and Mary Susan King. He enjoyed celebrating his British-Canadian heritage, sharing his uplifting appreciation of our Monarchy and making regular trips to London to visit with family and friends.
While he had special bonds with churches in Toronto and London during his life, Wally’s spiritual home was Georgian Bay and he often referred to it as “God’s country”. It was never too early or too late to go to the Bay and captain “Fideliter” or complete projects on his island. On many boat trips shared with family and friends, he travelled from Collingwood to the North Shore, Killarney, Manitoulin and Tobermory (and everywhere in between) and home again to Sans Souci, always making new friends and telling stories along the way. His love of all things Georgian Bay led him to become a driving force in the founding of the Township of the Archipelago, President of the Sans Souci & Copperhead Association and of the Georgian Bay Association, and the Founding Chairman of the Georgian Bay Land Trust. It was always a treat to hear Wally tell stories, many of which are memorialized in Passion for Georgian Bay, a book which remains a favourite for multi-generational residents and newcomers alike.
Wally’s days at Upper Canada College and living as a boarder in Seaton’s House were among the happiest and most influential of his life. He made many lifelong friends, was proudly active in the Cadet Corps, was very well cared for, and learned a lot. This was a welcome change to the challenges of primary schooling and life (including evacuations) as a boy during the war years in England. He served on the board of governors of the College for nine years and was a trustee for the UCC Foundation.
Wally loved his profession and looked forward to going to the office every day. He began his career as a trust officer at Royal Trust and ultimately established his own investment counsel and portfolio management firm in Toronto, Hughes, King & Company Limited. Wally exemplified the highest standards of his profession, was a trusted adviser to the Firm’s clients and mentor to many colleagues. He also contributed generously outside his own Firm as a director of many charitable and business organizations and through his philanthropic endeavors.
A Celebration of Life followed by a reception will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Lawrence Park Community Church, 2180 Bayview Avenue. The service will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. Go to www.lawrenceparkchurch.ca to obtain the link. A committal service for the family will be held.
