Parcourez la nécrologie de Charles Mandel 1959 2023 résidant dans la province Nova Scotia pour le détail des funérailles
Charles Irving Nathan Mandel died 27 November 2023 in Nova
Scotia, at home at his beloved off-the-grid home of Two Dog Marsh,
surrounded by animals who loved him, and with his loving partner Steph
Moore at his side.
Charles grew up in Edmonton, and lived in Toronto, Vancouver,
and many parts of the Maritimes. Wherever he went, he learned the life
of the town, made friends in high and low places, and heard the music
of the place in more ways than one. His ability to have an ear to the
ground and a finger in the wind translated into a rich career in
journalism, as a reporter, writer and editor for more than 25 years.
He won many journalism awards for features and articles in major
Canadian magazines and newspapers. He was the son of two writers,
Miriam Mandel and Eli Mandel, and he lived up to their
legacy.
Charles worked at play as hard as at work. He mountain-biked
and ran, winning races at the master level, and for some years wrote a
well-loved Substack called subthreerunning. Many of his friends were
racing buddies, where he built camaraderie through good humour,
friendly competition, and raising a beer after a long
run.
A few years ago, he and his partner moved to an off-the-grid
house in Nova Scotia, and Charles found new peace chopping cords of
wood for the winter, walking his dogs through his own woods, listening
to the birds by day and night, and moving closer to a rhythm of the
land. He didn’t want to leave the marshland this soon, but
it gave him comfort to the end. His Substack Tales from Beyond the
Grid shares his life and thoughts on living off the
grid.
As a journalist, Charles covered the visual arts for the
Edmonton Journal, was the Calgary Herald’s chief literary
correspondent, the Canadian correspondent for the leading technology
portal, Wired.com, and the national climate change reporter for the
National Observer. His articles have appeared in Canadian Business,
Explore, Maclean’s, The Globe and Mail and the National
Post, among many others. Most recently, he was Senior Writer for
Betakit.
Charles is survived by his beloved and long-time partner
Steph Moore, stepmother Ann Mandel, sisters Evie Mandel and Sara Krug,
sons Jesse Compton-Mandel and Liam Compton-Mandel and the two dogs of
Two Dog Marsh who he loved deeply.
A celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu
of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Food Bank.
