Heaven’s Gates opened for Charles Gilbert Dewey in
the early morning hours of November 21, 2024. Charles passed away
peacefully at Valley View Villa after numerous years of battling
cancer. Charles was born in New Glasgow to parents Charles and Agatha
Dewey on September 10, 1933 and lived in Trenton, N.S. for most of his
life. After graduating from Trenton High School, he attended Acadia
University before heading west with 3 buddies after graduation to work
on Vancouver Island. He returned to Nova Scotia to marry his high
school sweetheart and moved to Halifax. After having 3 children, he
returned to Trenton to raise his family where he grew up. Charles
worked at Eastern Woodworkers for a few years before becoming a
teacher and working at Pictou Regional Vocational School, present day
NSCC. He was involved in his community as a member of the Trenton Town
Council and served on many Boards and Commissions. Charles was a very
active member of First United Church, Trenton and once served as Clerk
of Session and later as treasurer. He was also an active member of the
Masonic Lodge until the end of his life. Upon his retirement, he kept
busy in his workshop, attending social groups and most recently
creating a room-size model railroad with his good friend Reg Conrod
and son Robert.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Agatha
(Hopper) Dewey; his wife of 64 years, Georgie Stewart (Munsie) Dewey;
and his son, David Wayne Dewey.
He is survived by daughter, Mary Ellen MacKay (Allan); son,
Robert Dewey (Sherma); and daughter-in-law, Krista Dewey;
grandchildren: Ryan (Sarah), Christopher (Mave), Kaitlyn and Benjamin;
and great- grandchildren: Austin, Riley and Brynna.
Funeral service to be held at First United Church, 81 High
St., Trenton, on Wednesday, November 27 at 2pm. Albion Masoic Lodge
will meet at 1pm Wednesday at First United Church to conduct their
service. Memorial donations may be made in Charles’ memory
to the Recreation Department of Valley View Villa (6125 Stellarton
Trafalgar Rd., Riverton, NS, BOK 1SO) or First United Church Memorial
Fund (PO Box 325, Trenton, NS, BOK 1XO). A very sincere thank you to
the staff of Valley View Villa for their compassionate care during his
stay. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral
Home.
