After a brief illness Catherine Ann Young passed away at the age of 90 years old at Poseidon Care Home in Winnipeg on April 13, 2023.
Catherine was born on March 17, 1933, to Edward and Jessie Pelz in Galt, now Cambridge, Ontario, where she went to school and grew up. As a child Catherine loved riding and learning how to maintain bicycles with her father, as well as spending time with her grandfather and veteran Baker, Lawrence Ramsey while he was baking his creations.
She attended a secretarial program from high school and learned the skills needed to enter the business workforce. Catherine married Arthur Schulz in March of 1955 in Preston Ontario, and lived in Kitchener, where they had their two Daughters, Linda in 1956, and Deborah in 1958.
In 1960 the family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they purchased a business and their home on Camrose Bay in Transcona. Catherine and Art went on to have two more children, Richard in 1962 and Wayne in 1967. Catherine looked after the household and was known to sew and make clothing for the kids while also doing the books for the business. In 1972 Catherine and Art divorced. Catherine remained at the house on Camrose Bay, where she was a loving mother and breadwinner for her four children. She worked as a secretary for many years and still managed to provide a good home and was a role model with Christian values for her family. In addition to being a working mother, Catherine was also a talented artist who loved to paint; she made several beautiful paintings for both sale and as gifts for her family.
She had a good heart and remained faithful to the Lord through many trials in her life, especially after losing her son Richard to an incident at work in August of 1980. In 1982 Catherine married Edwin Young who was her partner in life until he became ill and passed away eighteen years later. She loved Ed’s family, who treated her very well and maintained relationships after Ed’s passing.
Catherine moved to Campbell River, British Columbia for a few years to be near her daughter Linda and her children. She was involved with the church and became part of one of the prayer rooms there. Although she loved the friends she made there and the close relationship with her daughter and grandchildren, she longed for the sunny Winnipeg sky and wanted to spend some time with her son Wayne and his family while they were still young. Catherine moved back to Transcona, where she felt at home in the world and attended church with her friends. She finally landed at a church, Transcona Christian Reformed, that she loved, with people who made her feel welcome.
Catherine eventually moved out of Transcona into independent and long term care homes as a result of Alzheimer’s Dementia which became quite progressive in the last few years of her life.
Catherine was survived by her children Linda Schultz, Deborah (Wade) Zammit, and Wayne (Nadine) Schultz; her grandchildren, Carla Kitkoski David Zammit, Lauren Zammit, Neeley Rebel Fluke, Clinton Kitkoski, and Sabrina (Kelly) Donaldson, Grayson Schultz, Jayden Schultz, and Tyson Schultz; four great grandchildren and a few of her cousins out East.
