Catherine Martens Obituary
Cathy Martens, age 77, of Steinbach, MB., passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.
She is survived by her special friend Jean Piche, her son Ralph (Josie) and daughter Wanda (Carl), grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers.
She was predeceased by her husband Henry Martens of 51 years, her sister and parents – Abram & Tina Fehr.
Mom and Dad married when Mom was 22. They bought a farm east of Steinbach shortly after getting married. She loved taking care of the yard and making their home cozy. Mom’s specialty was most definitely gardening. Mom and Dad both worked very hard on the farm. They truly desired to make a comfortable life for themselves – and that they did.
Mom’s profession that she took most seriously was being a wife and a mother. She took care of her family with great pride. However as time went on she desired to find part-time employment to get out of the house and meet some new people. She worked at the sewing factory and Edgars Diner. She also worked as a Homecare worker – and this was by far her favorite job outside of our home. She loved taking care of the elderly.
Mom loved people. She was known by many. She seemed to be a known and familiar face to many of the restaurant staff in Steinbach, including McDonalds, Sky-Hy, A&W, Blatz Bistro.
Mom was a gifted seamstress, and in her middle age years she discovered a love a folk art painting. She took many classes to help her improve this skill. She also enjoyed listening to hymns.
But what Mom loved most was most definitely her family.
Dad passed away March of 2020. Mom missed Dad greatly. She truly missed having a close companion. She continued on the tradition of meeting different friends at different restaurants. However, in the spring of 2022, Mom met Jean Piche at McDonalds. They became special friends. Their relationship was extremely dear and precious to Mom.
October 8, 2024, Mom was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer. Her body deteriorated very quickly. On December 15, 2024, God called her home. We are grateful that her suffering is over – however she will be forever missed.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers or donations – please do something kind to someone in memory of Cathy.

The come and go viewing will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024, from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
The celebration of life reception with open mic will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at noon, at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. with public viewing starting one hour prior.
