After a life well lived, Katie slipped peacefully from this life on Friday, January 12, 2024 at the age of 96.
She is survived by her much loved and loving daughter Liz Harrison (Lisa), her adored granddaughter Kristin McParland (Derek), the lights of her life-her great grandchildren Hattie, Evie and Griffin, and her bonus grandsons Logan and Mason Adams.
Katie is also survived by her devoted brother Garry Moore (Velma) and her niece Judy Armstrong (Michael Robertson) and their children Lachlan and Aidan.
She was predeceased in 2017 by her wonderful husband Allan Keys with whom she spent 45 loving years. She is also predeceased by her sister Helen Armstrong (Graham “Doc”), her niece Peggi and her nephew Tim, as well as her first husband John MacGregor. Survived by a nephew and nieces from Allan’s family as well as many wonderful friends.
Katie was born in Cornwall in 1927, the eldest of three children. She was blessed with many friends and readily admitted they were her focus over academics. However, she knew she wanted to be a nurse so she studied exactly enough to be admitted to the program. Katie did her training at the Montreal General Hospital where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1950. She also earned her BSc in Nursing Education from the University of Ottawa as well as a diploma in Public Health from McGill University.
Katie devoted her life to caring for others through her careers in the Victorian Order of Nurses and with the City of Ottawa. She loved her time as a Public Health Nurse, visiting people in her “district” and in schools
across the city. When the law changed in 1970, Katie was instrumental in opening a Family Planning Clinic which was a great service to young women throughout the city. She was eventually promoted to the position of Director of Nursing for the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. She was recognized for her achievements by the Canadian Public Health Association and was made an honourary lifetime member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. Katie devoted much of her time to serving on numerous committees, trying to make life better for her fellow citizens.
Throughout her life, Katie gravitated to the water and many of her happiest moments were spent on the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers – “her rivers”.
Upon retirement, Katie most enjoyed her time as “Gram” to Kristin and “GG” to Hattie, Evie and Griffin. She loved her “Bridge Girls”, and her book club friends, along with fellow retired Public Health colleagues, her golf and curling friends from the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, the RNAO, McGill and Montreal General Alumni.
Katie is resting at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Funeral Home, 150 Woodroffe Avenue, (at Richmond). Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Funeral service will be held at Parkdale United Church, 429 Parkdale Avenue, (at Gladstone), on Friday, January 19 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Anthony Bailey officiating. Reception to follow. Interment in Capital Memorial Gardens.
Donations in Katie’s memory to Parkdale United Church’s Memorial Endowment Fund will be gratefully received and acknowledged.
