Catherine Jean Killaby Obituary
Caye passed away peacefully at Haliburton Extendicare on Thursday, May 16, 2024, of complications of dementia at the age of 95. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband and partner-in-life Peter Killaby, her parents Margaret (Weaver) and Tate Courtney, and her brothers Donnie and Hughie Courtney. She will be forever missed by her two sons and their wives, Guy (Patricia Goldman), and Douglas (Karen Jordan), and her five grandchildren Craig, Chris, Briana, Kiy, and Jaxson.
Caye grew up in Cooksville, Ontario, and first drew attention as a young equestrian, successfully show-jumping at the Royal Winter Fair. After marriage, she and Peter established the family home on Britannia Road West in the Township of Toronto. Caye began a life of service as the Township Acting Recreation Director, on the Library Board, and elected to the Town of Mississauga Council in 1968. Re-elected to the inaugural Council of the City of Mississauga from 1974 until 1976, she was one of the central figures – and initially the only woman on Council – battling many of the key municipal issues of the time.
Caye’s approach to politics – as it was to life – was to work towards positive outcomes on issues. She had a significant impact on the nascent City of Mississauga social services and worked to manage the municipal growth. She was a fierce and confident advocate for the people she represented, never timid about questioning conventional wisdom and she gave little regard for what others thought of her. While her style of local politics fell out of favour and her term on City Council ended, she continued to lend support to women in politics and served as the director for the Peel United Way, on the Board of Governors of Sheridan College, and the Board of Directors of the Credit Valley Hospital.
While Caye pursued these public endeavors, she always sought to simultaneously support Peter and her two boys. She always found a way to put their interests, education, and work on an equal footing to her efforts and accomplishments.
In retirement, Caye and Peter enjoyed wintering with their Florida friends and spent their summers on the lake in the Algonquin Highlands near Dorset. Caye’s last years were in the care of Haliburton Extendicare, where she received wonderful assistance from the staff – for which the family is very grateful.
Private Internment
Cremation has taken place for a later private internment at STREETSVILLE PUBLIC CEMETERY, 1786 Bristol Road West, Mississauga, ON, alongside her husband Peter. As an expression of sympathy, donations to Dorset Community Health Hub would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the HALIBURTON COMMUNITY FUNERAL HOME 13523 Hwy. #118, Haliburton, Ontario (705) 457-9209.
