In loving memory,
On November 22nd, 2023, after a difficult fight with Cancer, Cassie passed away surrounded by family with her husband at her side.
Born February 10th,1982, to parents Patricia (Pat) and Joseph (Joe) Zaretski in Winnipeg, MB. Cassie grew up loving animals raising chickens, rescuing ducklings from drowning and loved taking care of her babies (dogs), Raven, Jade and Indy, taking them on long walks through the Transcona Bioreserve and Birds Hill Park. She was adventurous riding dirt-bikes, motorcycles, ATV’s, snowmobiles and racing at Victory Lane Speedway in the Enduro 100 lap races as part of the only all female team with her sister Jen and sister-in-law Anna. They placed 7th over all in their final year. She also enjoyed going horseback riding with her nieces and tried her hand at skydiving. Cassie loved working in the shop with her dad and “frankensteining” old junkers onto which she would apply her artistic talents by painting flames and testing their limits at the gravel yard.
Those who knew her, even a little, were sure to notice her passion for all things Disney as she regaled others with stories of her countless trips to Disney parks around the world, showed off her collection of merchandise and completing the Disney World 5K and Disneyland Paris 5K and 10K races. Cassie also enjoyed playing guitar and amassed a collection of electric beauties.
Cassie graduated from Miles Macdonell Collegiate, she went on to study Social Work at the University of Manitoba, graduating on the Dean’s Honour Roll.
Cassie was always a hard and dedicated worker, starting with her first job at Robins Donuts where she would overfill jambusters for her sisters and have ‘robins’ eggs’ fights with coworkers. She was ever proud of her time working as a grease monkey with her father, servicing and driving commercial gravel trucks and heavy equipment at Favourite Transport. During this time, she developed a passion for old cars, working on vehicles and obtained her Class 1 Drivers License which allowed her to drive the tractors delivering gravel to the home being built by her brother.
In 2004, Cassie realized her dream joining her two Police Officer sisters as she began her 18-year career with the Winnipeg Police Service graduating from Recruit Class 141 with Badge number 2524. Cassie served in General Patrol, the Vulnerable Persons Unit, Downtown Beat Patrol, the Traffic Division and Training Academy. Highlights of her career included applying her degree in Social Work while showing patience and compassion within the Vulnerable Persons Unit and developing as an investigator in the Traffic Division, investigating serious and fatal motor vehicle collisions. She enjoyed working as a Police Vehicle Operations Instructor, spending many an overlap and temporary assignment at the track teaching new recruits and was set to transfer to the Academy full time when her illness set in. Cassie was also recognized as the Service’s first, and only, female Motorcycle Officer, becoming a Motorcycle Officer Instructor and being involved in the procurement of new helmets and BMW motorcycles for the Service.
Cassie was predeceased by her father, Joe in 2015. She is survived by her husband, Evan Murray, Mother, Pat, Sisters Jennifer, Carolyn Arseneault (Tim), Brother Joe (Anna), nieces Alexis and Addison Arseneault, Emma and nephew Aiden.
We saw you were getting weary, and a cure was not to be. So we put our arms around you and whispered Dad is waiting for you. With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away, and though we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands were put to rest. It broke our hearts to come to terms, we had to let you rest.
A celebration of Cassie’s life will be held Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 11:00am at the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations made in Cassie’s honour to Cancer Care Manitoba who have provided care and compassion throughout Cassie’s fight.
