Ann Smith (Carol Ann Smith) (nee Edwards)
June 16, 1939 – November 11, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. Ann left us peacefully on November 11, 2024, at the age of 85. Born in South Porcupine, ON, to William and Isobel Edwards. She grew up with a deep love for family, and her legacy of care, kindness, and dedication will continue to resonate for generations to come.
On June 22, 1962, Ann married her high school sweetheart, Peter Ronald Smith. Ann and Peter were best friends for almost 69 years. Together, they shared 62 wonderful years of marriage, building a life full of love, laughter, and adventure.
Ann is survived by her loving husband Peter, her four daughters – Lisa, Kirsti (Julius Horvath), Julie (Graeme Eastmure), and Michelle (Craig Dickie) and her grandchildren, whom she adored with all her heart: Tim (Hannah), Melanie, Brian, Katelyn, Christopher, Allyson (Keegan), Megan, and Leah, and her great-granddaughter, Emerson. She was the matriarch of our family, a constant source of love and support.
Ann will be missed by her siblings Susan Marshall (Victor) and William (Billy) Edwards (Debby) and many other cherished family and dear friends.
Ann’s passion for family was matched only by her dedication to helping others. After earning her education in Physical and Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto, Ann worked at Sick Kids, Women’s College, and North York General Hospitals, where she was a trusted caregiver to many. Later, she joined Peter at Smith’s Pharmacy, helping to grow the business into a well-known institution. Ann and Peter were respected pioneers in the industry, focusing on compounding and natural health. Her deep passion, knowledge and genuine care for others made an impact on everyone she assisted and was always at the forefront of her life’s work.
Ann and Peter’s life together was rich with shared experiences. They raised their family in Toronto, before moving to Thornbury 18 years ago. Summers, on Georgian Bay (12 Mile Bay) watching the sunset from the boat with the wind in her hair and exploring the islands with a picnic lunch. Winters, skiing at Alpine Ski Club, vacationing in Zihuatanejo, Mexico and exploring the world. She made friends wherever she went and often became involved in their communities. Ann ensured that time spent together was always filled with warmth.
In retirement, Ann and Peter built their beautiful dream home on the shore of Georgian Bay near Thornbury, a testament to their years of planning and love for family. The home has become a gathering place for all. Whether she was playing on the beach with the grandchildren, playing in the snow, cooking our favourite family recipes, gardening or decorating the biggest Christmas tree she could find, it was always filled with laughter.
Ann’s love for her family was boundless, and her nurturing spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She was the embodiment of devotion-always putting the needs of others before her own, ensuring the health and happiness of those around her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, and her unwavering commitment to her family and her community has left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Despite facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s in her later years, Ann remained an example of strength and grace, bravely smiling to the end.
A celebration of Ann’s life will be held at a later date.
With the same love and care that Ann gave so freely, we extend our deepest thanks to the Meaford Long Term Care Home for the exceptional care they provided and all who have supported our family during this time.
“A mother’s love is a legacy that never ends.”
We will miss you, Ann, but will carry you with us always.
