Carmen Stevenson Hunter
February 2, 2024
1939 – 2024
Carmen passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024, at age 84 at the St Boniface Hospital.
He was predeceased by his parents Jacques and Mabel, granddaughter Madelene, and brother Ronald. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Carol; son Kelly (Maggie); grandson Alex; siblings Dennis (Sharon), Ellen (Jack- predeceased), Joyce (Colin), and Carol (Clayton); sister-in-law Judy; Jackie (Ron), Jennette (Doug) and Kenny (Linda), and daughter Pam (Ken); along with many nieces, nephews and a great-niece.
Carmen was born in Carman, Manitoba in 1939. The eldest of nine children, he spent his childhood skating on and swimming in the Boyne River. He preferred sports over school and played hockey for many years. His hockey included junior in Carman and later beer league in Winnipeg. He also played football, baseball, curling, golf, and badminton.
After marrying Carol in Morden in 1964, they lived for many years on Clarence Avenue in Winnipeg where he loved to cut the grass on his riding mower. They spent 12 summers camping, and then bought a plot of land in the Interlake, built a small cabin, and enjoyed more than 30 summers there.
Carmen started his career driving truck, moved to managing grocery stores, and then to Mia Chemical where he spent 17 years selling fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Very community-minded, Carmen did volunteer work for the Westridge Community Club, and later for the Fort Garry Legion. For years he managed the Westridge Wonders adult mixed softball team. After-game gatherings in the backyard were a frequent activity. He finished his baseball career with the South Winnipeg Senior Slow Pitch.
Coming from a large family, Carmen had an outgoing personality and loved to joke, give nicknames and tell stories. He was faced with numerous health challenges including serious complications from an operation 23 years ago – which he faced with dignity and perseverance, never complaining. His memory was amazing to the end – he did crosswords daily and could cite customer lists from 50 years ago. He was a content man – saying “It has been a great ride” at the end. Carmen had a kind heart which touched many. He will be missed.
Special thanks to the many staff in the health care system and Transit Plus drivers who helped him – particularly the St Boniface Hospital Hemo-Dialysis unit and Dr. Verrelli.
Donations can be made in Carmen’s memory to the St Amant Foundation or the St Boniface Hospital Foundation – Other/Hemodialysis.
There will be a cremation and private burial. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Fort Garry Legion on May 26 beginning at 12:30.
