Carla Frances Mingiardi;
Carla Frances Mingiardi, age 59, of Kitchener Ontario, passed away on Sept. 9, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Carla is survived by her children Manuel Milanesi and Emy Sanita, parents Joseph Mingiardi and Joyce Mingiardi, and her sister Anne Marie (Stefan Steiner) Mingiardi.
Carla was born on May 10, 1965 to Joe and Joyce (Marseille) Mingiardi in Hamilton Ontario. At age 4 Carla and family moved to Kitchener.
Carla was known for her boundless enthusiasm, love of life, and deep affection for those around her. She had a remarkable ability to light up any room she entered, always making time for fun and connection with friends and family.
Her greatest treasures were her children. Carla would be the spark for laughter and togetherness with Manuel and Emy as they grew. She was a fantastic cook and always had a garden of herbs on her balcony. Even as she faced the knowledge of having a life shortened by cancer she lived to the fullest.
Her talent in art was evident from a young age. As a teen she taught herself how to sew and do her own alterations. She completed George Brown College’s pattern drafting course followed by a program in Fashion Design and Production Management at the Academy of Design in Toronto.
After several years in the late 80’s at the Canadian fashion line Zapata, she moved to Italy in 1989 for a 3 month intensive course in Italian. She fell in love with the country of her father and stayed for almost 30 years before returning to Canada 5 years ago. While living in Costalpino, near Siena, she became known as a local artisan. She ran her own design and pattern drafting business, made custom clothing and theatre costumes, produced the fashion line «Miss Italy» and worked at Valentino Sportswear. Along the way she became involved with commercial and film making in various European locations. One of her proud moments was receiving a personal letter of thanks and recommendation from Christopher Plummer for her work on the film The Exception (2015).
Her move back to Canada was challenging but her talent was quickly recognized in Toronto’s film and television circles. She became a proud member of IATSE and found a community. Her credits include «What We do in the Shadows», Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Short Treks and Nightmare Alley, for which she won a CAFTCAD award for Excellence in Craft. She brought all of her talent to the table.
Her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched and the vibrant spirit she shared with the world.
Many thanks for the tremendous care offered by the staff at the Grand River Cancer Centre, Dr. Nadia Califeretti, and the Hospice Waterloo Region.
