Carla Anne LaBelle
June 28, 1961- April 18, 2024
Carla Anne LaBelle (nee Ingleton), passed away on April 18, 2024, shortly after a traumatic injury. Her
loss is completely unexpected, and her family is profoundly saddened.
Carla was born on June 28 th , 1961 to Anthony and Sheila Ingleton (nee Roberts) in Nottingham, England.
She was the eldest of six children: Neil; Sarah; Janine; Jeremy; Simon. Carla spent her childhood with her
family in Jamaica, and her youth in London, Ontario where she attended Catholic Central High School,
and swam as a competitive club swimmer. Summer work included being a Junior Ranger in Northern
Ontario. She left the south and headed to Thunder Bay in 1979 to attend Lakehead University, where
she swam on the varsity swim team, graduating as a Forestry Technician in 1982. It was the start of her
long love affair with the out of doors and TBAY.
She worked for several years at American Can, Great Lakes Paper and the MNR in silva-culture, cruising,
and parks management. She continued to swim competitively and was an early and active member of
the Thunder Rays Masters Swim Club. Everywhere Carla went she made friends that have lasted a
lifetime. (And she won the 1982 women’s arm-wrestling championship in Caramat, Ontario.)
Swimming Masters led Carla to meet Bruce LaBelle in 1989 through mutual friend Mitch, and a great
romance was commenced. She married Bruce on August 4 th , 1990. Their love affair has lasted for almost
35 years. Carla left her work as a Park Asst. Superintendent when they started their family in 1992.
Home was where Carla’s heart sang, and she poured her love into her family and her friends. Conor
(1992), Linden (1995) and Morgan (1998) are the fruit of Carla and Bruce’s love, and love of life. They all
shared Carla’s sense of adventure, zest for life, commitment to excellence and love of plain old fun.
Nothing went uncelebrated in Carla’s world. The birthday cakes were homemade and wonderful. The
best costumes for Halloween, and the cutest clothes for every occasion flew from her sewing machine.
The garden was bountiful and the table laden, shared by family and friends, it has been a life quite
remarkable, …and the parties!
Her lifelong love of swimming and commitment to the Thunder Ray’s were central to Carla’s existence.
She was a vocal advocate for women, and all the gals at “The Complex” know Carla. Her loyalty, vitality
and enthusiasm encouraged others to succeed. Always an athlete, Carla was a regular at the BodyMind
Centre. In her brief time in Hospice, three of her friends remarked separately “she was a force of
nature”. Carla – from the Norse – Caroline – meaning strong and womanly. They got that right!
Especially, Carla’s friends also include her kayak pals. For years they have terrorized the Kam River and
gaggled up at her home “Kamwood” to celebrate conquering the wilderness. Snacks and beverages and
gales of laughter invariably ensued. Always a steadfast friend, Carla had found another great group of
women to share life with.
Carla was a traveller. Alone, with Bruce, with her kids, with her sisters, with other family, with friends,
she loved to move. She loved the adventure of the road. Most recently Carla and Bruce spent three
weeks in Barbados, a kind of second honeymoon, a place, and a time where their long love was
renewed.
Predeceased by her father Anthony, Carla is survived by her husband Bruce, their children Conor, Linden
and Morgan, her family, her in-laws Jean and Herman LaBelle, and Bruce’s extended family.
Always a pet lover, her dog Cricket left us last fall. They will enjoy the next walk together.
A Mass celebrating the life of Carla LaBelle will be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, 211 Archibald St S,
Thunder Bay, Ontario on Thursday May 2 nd , 2024 at 1 pm.
A time of fellowship and remembrance will follow at the DaVinci Centre, 340 Waterloo St S, Thunder
Bay, Ontario.
A further celebration of life, with appropriate enthusiasm and music, will be held at Kamwood on a
future date and communicated to family and friends when known.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Carla and Bruce LaBelle Family
Bursary at Lakehead University, Faye Peterson House, or the charity of your choice in remembrance of
Carla.
We would also like to thank the first responders, staff in the ICU at Thunder Bay Regional, and the
compassionate and capable folks in the Hospice at St. Joe’s for your loving care of Carla.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
