Passed away in Toronto on May 15, 2023 with family at his side. Born in 1931 in Chatham, Ontario, son of Horace and Margaret Rowden, loving brother to Ann and Michael. Married in 1952 to Joyce (McGillivray), the love of his life. Dedicated father to Cynthia (Roger Hart), Virginia (John Wright) and Stephanie (Brian Matheson), and grandfather to Emily (Erin) and Claire (Patrick). In addition to being a supportive uncle and cousin, he and Joyce were foster parents to many children at their farm south of Ottawa.
Denis had a long and successful career as an officer in the military, including stints throughout Canada and the UK in both air crew and intelligence roles. He was proud of his over 5000 flying hours on Lancaster, Neptune, Argus and Hercules airplanes. Also, as Denis was trained in Russian, he was also assigned to Aeroflot flights over North America during the Cold War. There was hardly a region of the world that he had not visited. Following his retirement from the military, he worked for both St. John Ambulance and the Canadian Red Cross, including on veterans’ support programs and relief missions to the Ukraine, St. Croix, Russia and Guam.
In his retirement, Denis pursued many activities, including music, poetry, painting, woodcarving, creative writing and gardening, which he enjoyed into his ’90’s. He cared for his wife with great kindness during her long battle with dementia. After decades in Ottawa, following Joyce’s death in 2022 he moved to Toronto to be closer to family. Denis accepted his health decline with grace, and looked forward to joining Joyce. His daughters thank friends and family who called and visited in his final months.
Cremation has taken place. A family service will be held at a later date.
Denis was a supporter of many charities, and would be happy for memorial donations to be made to a charity of your choice.
