It is with great sadness that the family of Calogero Cuffaro announces the passing of a beloved husband, papà, nonno and bisnonno on August 13th, 2024 at the age of 93. He is now reunited with his beloved wife Anna (née Di Salvo), with whom he shared over 61 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Grotte, Sicily, Calogero immigrated to Canada as a young man with his parents and siblings. He dearly loved his brothers and sisters and shared many cherished moments with Anna Baldo, Pasquale, Antonio, Angelo, Elio ”Pino” and Concetta (infant), all of whom have preceded him in death. He was a loving papà to his children Maria Plante (late Régis) and Michael Cuffaro (Bernadette) and proud nonno to Anna (Lucas) and Monica Plante and Michael A. Cuffaro and Calogero (Kendra) and bisnonno to Elio Cuffaro.
Calogero was a dedicated provider, and worked tirelessly to give the best to his growing family. He first worked in construction in Toronto, and eventually retired from Ford Motor Company as a machine operator after 35 years of service. His work ethic was so unstoppable that he would find other jobs to work during summer shutdown, especially picking fruit. Everything he did, he did out of love for his family.
True to his upbringing on a farm, Calogero was an avid gardener and would spend hours each day lovingly tending to his fruit trees, rabbits and huge vegetable patch. All summer, no one could leave his house without bags full of Swiss chard, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants and a couple of his metre-long cucuzzi. During the colder months, he would make delicious wine, sausages and cured meats to be generously shared with anyone who visited.
Calogero loved to sing and dance, and would liven any gathering with his songs and stories. His generosity and convivial spirit will be remembered by all who knew him. Even as his health declined due to multiple strokes, he stayed true to himself until the end, and enjoyed welcoming visitors, watering his tomato plants, wheelchair dancing, praying with his fellow Italians and savouring his Thursday-evening glass of wine at Huron Lodge.
The family would like to express gratitude toward Calogero’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law Paolo and Angela Siggia for their thoughtful visits and support throughout his illness. Special thank yous also to the team at Huron Lodge’s Willow unit (especially Louise, Kathleen and Lisa) for enriching Calogero’s final two and a half years; to Dr Papini and Dr Jacobs for their exceptional sensitivity and care; and to Justin Bornais for his entertainment and visits.
If you so desire, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or donations for masses in Calogero’s memory would be greatly appreciated. Visitation to take place at Families First, 3260 Dougall Ave. Friends and family of Michael Cuffaro are invited to visit from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, August 19th. Friends and family of Maria Plante are invited to visit Tuesday, August 20th from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with parish prayers at 4:30 PM
All are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21st at St. Angela Merici. Entombment to follow at Victoria Greenlawn Cemetery.
