Obituary of Bruce Anthony Marsh, New Waterford
Bruce Anthony Marsh, 61, of New Waterford, NS passed away December 21, 2024, with his loving family by his side after a courageous struggle with cancer.
He was born to Karl and Marilyn Marsh on July 29th, 1963 in the town of New Waterford, NS.
Described by his family as a «quiet but deeply inquisitive child», Bruce was often seen at family gatherings with his nose in a book, tucked into the corner of the room. He would take any electronics, radios, even dirt bikes apart down to the nuts and bolts out of sheer curiosity; wanting to understand how everything worked. Having a real knack for problem solving suited him well when he decided to pursue a career as an Engineer.
Bruce was a proud graduate of the Canadian Coast Guard College in 1984 and began his profession as a Marine Engineer. This would take Bruce sailing in the Arctic Circle, overseas to Aberdeen, Scotland and most importantly to St. John’s, NL where he met the love of his life, Helen. Wanting to spend less time at sea away from his family, Bruce took the opportunity to start the next chapter of his career as an Instructor at the Canadian Coast Guard College for over 20 years.
Bruce was respected for his professional integrity, commitment to excellence, and being a generous colleague who always had time and a willingness to help others. He was a mentor to many cadets over the years who loved his easy nature, and commitment to ensuring their success whenever possible. Bruce was deeply humbled to receive an Outstanding Service award in recognition for Outstanding Duty and Service of the Highest Order to the Canadian Coast Guard and the People of Canada.
What could be described as a second career and passion was Bruce’s involvement in volunteer fire fighting for over 30 years. Bruce initially got his start with the Goulds Volunteer Fire Department and then enthusiastically joined the New Waterford Volunteer Department when he moved back to Nova Scotia. His devotion to help expand the roles and capabilities of rural fire fighters led him to develop new programs and protocols for sea search and rescue in the CBRM.
The professional qualities Bruce emulated, combined with his gregarious personality, left him with cherished personal friendships and countless fond memories from time spent giving back to his community.
These qualities could also be found in his loving wife and best friend, Helen. They shared an instant bond when they met in 1984 through mutual friends Helen and Tony Patterson, who would stay close with them throughout their lives. Weeks after their first date there were talks of getting married and starting a life and a family together. They were married for 38 beautiful years, and were a shining example of love, commitment and friendship. Most will fondly remember Bruce and Helen sharing a laugh, and definitely a dance together whenever they could.
Bruce took an enormous amount of pride and joy in supporting his three busy children through seemingly endless sports and activities. This deepened his community ties and opened up many opportunities for volunteerism. He was a fixture as a dedicated coach in soccer, basketball and hockey for many years. He was committed to helping young athletes grow on and off the court, field or ice. He also devoted many hours to volunteering for Soccer Nova Scotia and Soccer Cape Breton, as well as being a Coal Bowl team «buddy» with Helen. Together, they were true ambassadors of Cape Breton hospitality.
Bruce will be remembered by most for his kind, deeply empathetic nature. He had a gentle spirit that allowed him to connect with people almost everywhere he went in life. He was easy to talk to, and loved a good chitter chat. He enjoyed travelling the world and going on cruises with Helen, listening to live music wherever it could be found, camping, kayaking, and watching football on Sundays. He rediscovered his love for playing music in retirement by joining Second Wind Concert Band. Bruce was an incredible husband, father and grandfather whose support and love for his family never wavered, but only deepened through the years. He will be sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bruce is survived by his children; Katie (Jay) Marsh, David (Nicole) Marsh, of Edmonton, and Heather (Sean) Bignall, of Halifax. He is also survived by his sister, Karla (John) MacNeil, his grandchildren; Theo, Oliver, Ruby, Zach, Taylor, Ashley; and fur baby, Tessa. He was blessed with a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, all of whom Bruce stayed connected with over the years. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Karl and Marilyn Marsh; his sister, Susan Deruelle, and his father-in-law, Gerald O’Neill.
We wish to extend our sincerest gratitude to Dr. Azer, Dr. Lucas and the staff of the Cape Cancer Centre, as well as the team at Midtown Pharmasave. We also want to extend our deepest thanks to Palliative Care Services for the incredible support and holistic care provided to Bruce this last year.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Funeral Mass and Celebration of Bruce’s life will be held on Saturday, December 28 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Godwin Obike officiating. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a reception to follow at the New Waterford Fire Hall at 3336 Walsh Avenue, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to An Cala Palliative Care Unit or New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
