Beryl Doris Brown (McLean). Peacefully surrounded by her family on April 16, 2023, in Montreal.
Born on May 26, 1924, to Lillian Grace Lawrence (Brown) and William Wilfred Pugsley Brown in Aulac, New Brunswick, Beryl grew up on a farm on the Tantramar marshes. A proficient student, she obtained a secretarial diploma from Mount Allison business school. In 1945 she married James McLean of Montreal, a professional golfer who was stationed in Moncton by the RCAF. For many years they lived in Hudson, Quebec, where Beryl supported Jim’s career as club professional at Whitlock Golf Club.
Beryl raised eight children, created a stable, nurturing home for them, and sent them all off to university. Her home overflowed with books, and her children lugged armfuls home from Hudson’s War Memorial Library. She led her family in singalongs at an upright piano, playing Christmas carols and popular tunes. Always creative, Beryl sewed, knitted and always applied a thoughtful aesthetic touch to her surroundings. She loved to read and was a great fan of Louise Penny’s work.
Beryl eventually became an avid golfer. She was an honorary lifetime member at Whitlock and a member at Royal Oak Golf Club in Titusville, Florida.
To her contemporaries, family and all who knew her, Beryl was a deeply decent person, beautiful, stylish, elegant and gracious. (An appearance undermined occasionally when she would giggle until gasping for breath.) She had a wonderful sense of fun.
Beryl is particularly remembered for her steady moral compass, always pointing to kindness and human respect. She was remarkable in her ability to thoughtfully evolve, adapt and embrace the vast social changes she experienced in her near century of life.
Beryl was preceded in death by her brother Carl in 1951 and her beloved husband James in 1985. She is survived by her partner Daniel Crowley of St. James, New York, her dearly loved sister Geraldine (Wolfe), of Moncton, New Brunswick, and her children: Jim (Odette), Lawrence (Myung Joo), Malcolm (Julie), Jennifer (Cynthia), Margaret (Rod), Kathryn (Bill), Bruce (Nancy), and Barbara (Mark). A sprawling clan of offspring includes 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, found across Canada, the United States and Australia.
Beryl spent her last years in assisted living at The Cambridge in Pointe Claire. The family is deeply grateful for the kindness, warmth, care and affection she received from the wonderful staff there.
Beryl was beloved by all who knew her and will be missed by many.
She will be buried at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Aulac, at a date to be announced.
