On January 29, 2023, Bronia (Bernice) Stelmaczonek of Edmonton, peacefully passed away at the age of 98 years.
Bronia will be lovingly remembered and missed by her son, Karl Stelmaczonek (Mary-Lou Heintz); her grandchildren, Maxwell Stelmaczonek, Julia Stelmaczonek (Cian Hackett); her sister, Stasia Mazurek; daughter-in-law, Marie Muszynski; and son-in-law, John Bohaychuk.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; her son, Richard; her daughter, Regina; and her parents, Stanislaw and Julia Burda.
Bronia was born in 1924 in the village of Szyli, Poland. In February 1940, at the age of 15, the Soviets invaded her village. She, along with her parents and younger sister, were sent to a labour camp in Siberia where she and her father worked clearing forests. In the fall of 1941, an amnesty was announced and her family was able to leave Siberia. Bronia volunteered to join the Polish military to train and serve as a nurse. She served from 1942 to the end of WW2 in 1945. Her time in the military took her to Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, and Italy. After the war, she lived in England for two years, and then in 1949 she immigrated to Edmonton. It was here that she married Joseph in 1950, and together they raised three children.
Bronia was known for being very kind, compassionate and extremely devoted to her family and many friends. She especially enjoyed being a loving Babcia to her two grandchildren. She enjoyed a long career with the provincial government and valued her time in the Polish community, volunteering for several years with the Women’s Auxiliary Service. She was the last surviving Polish veteran in Alberta, from World War II.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Bronia’s Life will be held in the summer of 2023.
