Brian William Tupper
1959-2023
Brian William Tupper,
63, a proud lifetime resident of Port Williams, passed away on June
23, 2023, after fighting liver cancer with incredible bravery in
Valley Hospice, with his loving wife by his side. Born on July 14,
1959, to Beverly (King) and the late William «Bill» Tupper,
he was the eldest of three boys. Throughout his life, Brian was a
devoted husband to Betty Jean (Balcom) for 40 wonderful years, an
amazing dad to Ashley and Tyler, and an adoring Grampie to Cara,
James, and Lucy. Brian spent his working years first at the family
business, Cornwallis Trucking, and later dedicated 30 years as the
Rural Route Contractor for Canada Post in Port Williams. Not one to
sit still, he even ran his own janitorial supplies and services
business, A’N’T Janitorial and Supplies, taking care of the
cleanliness of places like Port Williams Community Centre and
VanOostrums Farm Equipment. Retirement wasn’t Brian’s cup of tea, as
he continued working for Port Williams Public Works until the very
end. As an active member of the Port Williams and District Lions Club,
never missing a meeting for 34 years, Brian took the motto
‘We Serve’ to heart. Contributing his time and
holding numerous positions, including King Lion, Bar Chairman, Board
of Directors, and Secretary (with the invaluable assistance of his
lovely wife). He represented the club on the Port Williams Recreation
Committee, EMO, Village Commission, Board of Trustees of the Community
Center and the Murdoch C. Smith Library. He spent many hours helping
make service projects like Adopt a Highway and Christmas Hampers
successful. As the initial Chair of the Port Williams Day Celebration
Committee in 2008 and then onwards each year he worked tirelessly to
ensure that his community was celebrated well and of course wowed with
fireworks! He looked forward to this event every year and this year
was no exception – attending all the festivities mere weeks before his
passing. If there was something going on in Port Williams, especially
at the Community Centre, you could bet Brian was there with a smile.
It came as no surprise when he received accolades such as the Harold
B. Legge Volunteer of the Year (2015), Village of Port Williams
Representative Volunteer of the Year (2015), and most recently, the
Melvin Jones Fellowship Award (April 2023) from Lions International.
He was also a committed member of the Port Williams Branch of T.O.P.S
and enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Lake George, not
too far away, just in case he was needed at the hall. Brian was
preceded in death by his father, William «Bill» Tupper, and
his brother, Kevin; father-in-law, Graham Balcom; stepfather-in-law,
Ernie Morine; brother-in-law, Jerome Lawrence, and best friend, Tim
Graves. He leaves behind his devoted wife of forty years, Betty Jean;
his daughter, Ashley (Al) Kirkbride and their children Cara, James and
Lucy and as well as his son, Tyler (Katelyn Swain) and children
Jac-lynn, Jayme-Lynn, and Jayelyn. He is survived by his mother,
Beverly; his brother, Scott; mother-in-law, June Morine;
sisters-in-law, Brenda May (John) Hardacker, Sherri Lee (Brian) Dill;
brothers-in-law, Joey and Jamie Balcom and a wide circle of nieces,
nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins. His memory will live on amongst
his ‘extra’ sons – Tyler’s friends that
he treated like his own trying to keep them on the «straight
and narrow», his coffee buddies, the Thursday lunch crew, and
cherished friends who were like family. The family would like to thank
Dr. A. Mossman, Dr. S. Snow and the Oncology Department at the Valley
Regional Hospital for their loving care the past two and a half years.
They also extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care team and
staff of Valley Hospice for their superb care during Brian’s
final days. Debbie Graves, the family’s best friend,
deserves heartfelt appreciation for being there every step of the way.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 27, 2023, at 11 o’clock in
New Minas Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Daniel Cormier.
Following the service, we invite family, friends, and members of his
beloved Port Williams community to join us for a time of fellowship
around noon at the Port Williams Community Centre. Light refreshments
will be served. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests
donations to the Port Williams and District Lions Club or Valley
Hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral
Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
