Brian Smith Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brian Michael Smith, who left us Monday, October 28th, 2024. Brian was the beloved husband and best friend of Carol Gray; father of Andrea Evans Smith (Bill Evans), Lawren Smith (Jessi McDonald), Matthew Gray-Smith (Lynn D’Souza), and Fraser Gray-Smith (Micheline), and grandfather of Charlotte, Elliott, Colin, Benton, and of a new grandson soon to arrive.
Brian was a Renaissance Man. His appreciation for the arts was profound and diverse. Whether it was listening to the soaring drama of operas or CBC Musique on Saturday afternoons while washing his cars, or strumming folk songs on one of his five cherished guitars, music was a constant influence in his life.
As a lifelong learner, Brian embodied the spirit of curiosity. He earned his first degree on a full scholarship, a CFA designation later in his career, and a second degree in French after retirement. He was an avid reader with a wide range of interests, from politics, history to global cultures.
Brian’s passion for horticulture flourished in his later years, specializing in exotic succulents and cacti. His vibrant garden was a testament to his green thumb and love for nature. He found solace and inspiration in the outdoors, paddling many of the routes of the Group of Seven, hiking the picturesque Bruce Trail, and exploring the beauty of Canada’s West Coast and Lake Superior landscapes with Carol.
Before retirement, Brian had a successful career as an investment counsellor. His work was fulfilling but never more important than spending time with his family. Brian was a private man, however, his strong convictions for justice gave him the courage to speak up and take action when others would turn a blind eye.
An avid photographer, Brian captured the essence of life through his lens, leaving behind a breathtaking gallery of over 90,000 photos that tell the stories of his travel adventures and the people he loved. Each image reflects his unique perspective and passion for capturing fleeting moments.
Brian is survived by his loving family, who will forever cherish the memories they created together. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. His spirit will continue to resonate in the melodies he played, the beauty he nurtured, and the stories he shared.
In honor of Brian’s life, we invite family and friends to a visitation being held at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492, on Friday, November 8th, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. Please join family and friends by gathering at the Trinity Annan United Church for a funeral service on Saturday, November 9th, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. to celebrate the remarkable man he was.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to Pancreatic Cancer Foundation of Canada would be appreciated. Online condolences can be sent to Brian’s family by visiting his memorial at www.woodfuneralhome.ca.
Brian Michael Smith will be deeply missed but always remembered for his love of life, music, nature, and, above all, his family.
