It is with great sadness that the family of Brian Michael Rebus announce that he passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.
Brian grew up in Newcastle and attended school in Drumheller where he was a star athlete. He was a vital member of the 1972 Drumheller High School Provincial Volleyball championship team. He continued playing sports for a number of years.
Brian drove taxi for his sister Gloria’s taxi company in Fort McMurray for many years, then later he become a labourer with LIUNA Local 92 working pipelines and plant shutdowns.
Brian was the proud recipient of The Carnegie Medal from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. He was awarded the medal when he helped to save Frank B. Andrews from drowning, in East Coulee, Alberta, June 25, 1987. Andrews, 27, was inside a sewer system lift station, operating a pump to evacuate ground water which had flooded it. Stricken by carbon monoxide fumes from the pump, he lost consciousness and fell face down into the water. Rebus, 32, a laborer who was working outside the
shaft, immediately climbed down a ladder to Andrews and pulled him out of the water. One of the nearby workers who had been alerted threw a hose into the shaft, which Rebus attempted, without success, to tie around Andrews: another worker then lowered a vinyl line, and Rebus tied it around Andrews’s chest. While others outside the shaft pulled Andrews to the surface, Rebus followed on the ladder, supporting him. Out of the shaft, Andrews was revived. Both he and Rebus were hospitalized for carbon monoxide inhalation, and they recovered.
Brian is predeceased by mother Mary, father Joseph, sister Gloria, brother Gene and brother-in-law Gene Ostrowski. Brian is survived by his sisters Judy, MaryAnn (Allan), and Holly, as well as his brothers Terry (Susan), Robert (Renee), Kenny and Mark.
Nephews Rolland, Tracey (Michelle), Jason, Vincent, Jeremy, Jeff, Chad and Robbie.
Nieces Melissa (Greg), Alisha (Jason), Rochelle and Raeanne as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
Aunty Olga and Aunty Rita as well many cousins.
Also left to mourn his loss is Barb Clow, his long-term love and life partner as well as his three doggies.
The family would like to express our gratitude to the staff of both the Drumheller and Red Deer hospitals for their care and attention to our Brian.
Prayers & Visitation will be held Saturday, January 13th, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home, interment to follow at Drumheller Municipal Cemetery.
