Brian’s Obituary
Brian Harold Franklin Hayden, of Hartford NB, departed this life on August 18, 2023, at Vancouver General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. His death resulted from complications arising from a significant cardiac episode only a few days prior. He was 70 years old.
A lifelong resident of the Woodstock NB area, Brian was the third eldest son of the late Ivan and Carrie (McBride) Hayden. Born March 27, 1953, he was a graduate of Woodstock High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Allison University in 1975. It was there that he met the love of his life, Susan, and they married on April 1, 1978.
Following university, Brian returned to Woodstock and joined his father in the operation of an automobile dealership, thereby discovering his natural talent for salesmanship. He eventually moved on to real estate, and later, with Susan, Brian opened his own licensed brokerage, Hartford Realty, now in its 27th year, as well as Hayden Homes, a modular home retailer.
In this work, Brian had regular business dealings with numerous First Nations throughout Atlantic Canada and became a proponent for recognition and respect for the treaty rights and cultural practices of Indigenous peoples.
In addition, for over ten years in the 1980s and ‘90s, Brian was an integral part of the Hayden family operation of Hideaway Lodge, a hunting camp located at North Lake, NB where he served sports as a licensed guide and, when the day’s hunt concluded, delighted them with stories drawn from his family’s passion for the pursuit of game and the collection of sporting firearms.
Brian’s great light shone brightly in the lives of his family, his friends, and throughout the place he called home. He was a devoted son, a loving spouse, an exuberant father, a steadfast brother, a doting grandfather, and a true friend.
In 1977, Brian and Susan acquired their property in Hartford, just outside Woodstock where, in a sprawling farmhouse and on the accompanying large acreage, they raised their five children (Amanda, Gregory, Katelyn, Daniel, and Rachel) and provided a home to a menagerie of pets including dogs, horses and cats. Importantly, this home became a focal point for gatherings of the extended Hayden and McBride families, as well as a spot where legions of friends were welcomed frequently, as the two of them gave free rein to their unrivaled spirit of hospitality.
Brian possessed seemingly boundless energy for all aspects of the social, cultural, and political life of his community. His involvements over the years included Woodstock Minor Hockey Association, St. James United Church, Woodstock Rotary Club, Carleton Manor, Carleton Manor Foundation, Woodstock Figure Skating Club, Children’s Wish Foundation, Western Valley Regional Service Commission, and the Woodstock Local Service District.
In all these pursuits, Brian typically assumed leadership roles, serving for many years in some cases. But among his greatest contributions to community life were the patience and generosity he displayed giving young people confidence in acquiring new skills and the tender loving affection he offered to the residents of Carleton Manor.
Brian was predeceased by his father and mother, Ivan and Carrie Hayden; his daughter Amanda Reynolds and granddaughter Grace Reynolds; aunts and uncles Don and Irma Parker; John Fream, James and Dorothy McBride; Sam and Emma Hayden; cousin David Fream, father and mother-in-law, Michael and Marie Conoley; and brother-in-law Tim Conoley.
He is survived by his wife Susan; his son Gregory and daughter-in-law Susan and their children Kinley and Ivan; his daughter Katie and son-in-law Chance McGrath and their children Abigail, Breanna, and Isabelle; son Daniel; daughter Rachel and her children Jaxon and Huxley; son-in-law Chris Reynolds and his wife Andree; his brother Bob and sister-in-law Elaine and their children Matthew, Ivan and Amy; brother Rick and sister-in-law Lynne and their children, Jeff, Michael, and Kristina; and his brother Brent and sister-in-law Pam and their children Connor and Mackenzie. He is survived as well by sisters-in-law Karen Conoley and her spouse Thomas Hintze, Maureen MacNabb and her spouse Larry; as well as aunt Greta Fream; and numerous cherished cousins.
A private funeral service for the family will be conducted by Rev. Canon Walter Williams at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Jackson Falls NB and Brian will be interred in the adjacent cemetery in a private burial service.
Brian gave himself fully and freely to his family, his friends, and to the community in which he lived his whole life. The family plans to honor his wonderful life with the type of gathering which Brian would have wanted – fun, lively, rich in storytelling and revelry, with food and beverage in abundance – an occasion where all will be welcomed to celebrate rather than to mourn. The family extends an invitation to all friends to join them at the Hayden Home at 319 Route 550 in Hartford between 3-8 pm on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Scott Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. The family suggests that Memorial donations may be made to The Carleton Manor Foundation or the Western District 4-H or to any of the many causes to which Brian gave his support during his life. www.scottfh.com
