Breta Fredrica Brown (January 30, 1942 –October 12, 2024) was a woman who was truly one of a kind! She was born in the picturesque community of Lock’s Harbour (later resettled) to wonderful parents, Rosie and David Marsh. Breta was one of an amazing group of siblings whom she loved dearly.
As a young woman, Breta moved to St. John’s where she studied to be a Certified Nursing Assistant at St. Claire’s Mercy Hospital. It was during this time in St. John’s that she met her husband-to-be, MacDonald (Mac) Brown, who was working in the city but originally from Summerford. Eventually, the two moved to Ontario where they married and started a family. The first two of their four children were born while they were living in the Toronto area and the younger two came along after they had retuned to their home province.
Breta, Mac, and family spent a little over a decade living in Glenwood, where they had a great circle of friends and neighbours. In the late 1970s, the family relocated to Gander and soon after Breta began work as a CNA at Lakeside Homes. She also spent the last years of her career life working as a Student Assistant at Gander Collegiate. She was always naturally drawn to work situations which gave her the opportunity to help others.
Her deep compassion for others was a central theme in her life. She was a long-time volunteer with Gander Goodwill and served on the executive board in that capacity.
Breta was also a great deal of fun. No matter where life would take her, others in that vicinity would gravitate towards her. Even during the last decade of her life, when her health challenges were daunting, she was a bright spot in the days of those fortunate enough to be caring for her.
Breta lost her beloved husband, Mac, in 2018 and she was always grateful for the support she received from her family and friends during that heartbreaking time.
She even made the most of her time in the hospital by reading a great number of books. Remarkably, in the last year alone, she read 184 books – mostly novels and biographies!
She will be mourned and deeply missed by her many friends and, particularly, her family –adult children Allan, Dawn, Keith and Mark and their significant others; her adult grandchildren Ashley, Neil and Samantha and their significant others; and her precious great-granddaughters Mia and Lily.

The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday Oct 15th, 2024 from 2pm to 4pm at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander.
Service will take place at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander on Wednesday Oct 16th, 2024 at 2pm.
