Blanche Gau, a beacon of kindness and generosity, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2024, at the age of 97 in St. Albert, AB. Born on November 13, 1927, in Broderick, SK, Blanche’s life was a testament to her faith-filled spirit and her unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and community.
Her early years were spent on the farm in Vilna and later in Westlock. Upon graduation she moved on to nursing school at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton. Her career as a registered nurse spanned several locations in Alberta and British Columbia, where she touched the lives of countless individuals with her care and compassionate heart. Blanche’s commitment to the service of others extended beyond her professional life as she was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, as well as an active volunteer with the Norwood Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels.
Family was the cornerstone of Blanche’s world. She was a dedicated mother to Maureen, Bob (Louise), and Pat (Gwyneth), and she adored her grandchildren Charlene, Shawn, Jason, David, Caitlan, Renée, Cooper, Laine, and Hueyy. Blanche was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Bud, with whom she shared a long and wonderful life.
Her interests were diverse. She found joy in sewing, creating beautiful garments, and various crafts. She also loved her music, especially Andre Boccelli and ABBA, as well as playing the piano. She was also pretty good in the kitchen, especially with the chocolate chip cookies, jam, and sauerkraut that she regularly sent everyone home with. Her hands were rarely still as she believed in the value of hard work and the importance of leaving something tangible and comforting for those she loved.
Those who knew Blanche would describe her as hardworking and caring. She approached life head on. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind but also had a generous heart, always ready to give more than she received. Her life was filled with small, loving gestures that, together, created an extraordinary legacy of warmth and care. In the words of Mother Teresa, «Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.»
As we bid farewell to Blanche, we celebrate a life that was rich in joy, purpose, and love. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the power of kindness and the beauty of a generous heart. Blanche’s spirit will forever be woven into the fabric of the lives she touched, and her memory will be cherished by all who were blessed to know her.
In keeping with Blanche’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a service will be held in the spring.
Blanche’s family would like to give special thanks to all the staff and volunteers of the Youville Home for all the care and friendship they gave to her over the past 16 years.
