Blue eyes looking into brown, a tear on his cheek, and a smile on his face Bill Metcalfe passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.
Bill was the son of Arthur & Joan Metcalfe and grew up in the Walkerton area. He will be missed by his siblings – Edith (Jim Grass), Bob (Lois), Brian (Pat), and Barry (Jayne).
Bill met his one true love, Dianne (Zettel), at the young age of 17. He always said he never slept that first night and knew it was love at first sight. They were married 2.5 years later and raised their family in Walkerton. They have three children – Amanda (Kyle Holford) of Lively, Jamie (Chris Levoy) of Collingwood, and Christopher (Ashley Ritchie) of Walkerton.
Family was everything to Bill – his children were his pride and joy and he tried to instill in them to work hard, be honest, and treat others kindly. To his oldest daughter, Amanda, he definitely passed on his love of animals and his ability to laugh through good times and bad. To his little fireball Jamie, he passed on a strong, determined personality and the strength to stand up and say what needs to be said and to do what needs to be done. To Christopher, his son, he instilled an amazing work ethic, and many skills from driving a dirt bike to building a house. Years later you could see the pride in Bill’s eyes as he watched his own children become parents.
Schooling was not Bill’s area of interest, but hands-on was his thing. He started his mechanic apprenticeship at the age of 16 and was the youngest person to graduate from Fanshawe College with his Mechanics License. He was known for his speed at changing a motor in his backyard, with the motor strung up over a branch on a tree. After Fanshawe, he went on to get his Millwright License, and with his love of trucks, his 310T License.
Bill was known as Mr. Fix-It and with Dianne renovated many houses from the studs out – learning to drywall, wire, plumb, lay floors – you name it – they did it. His garage was his happy place – filled with tools and projects on the go. Later in life Bill purchased antique trucks which he loved fixing and spent hours tinkering with. Bill would often be sought out by friends and fellow campers with, “Bill, how do you fix this?”, “Billy, what do you think this would be?” And he never let anyone down. A wrench in one hand and a drink in the other – he’d fix it!
His passion for driving led to many jobs in the transportation industry but also for Bill & Dianne to tour Canada and the United States – whether on their Harley, or cruising down scenic routes in the convertible with the roof down, and more often than not, in his truck with a big camper in tow. Happy times were enjoyed for 4 winters in Florida with the trailer as their home and happy hour spent with new friends and old. With Bill’s built in GPS and Dianne by his side, there was no road left unexplored.
And then came the grandchildren – he never missed an opportunity to have one sitting on his lap watching a movie together and stealing their snacks. Bill had 6 grandchildren … Tyce, his first immediately stole Papa’s heart the first time he held him / Logan whose first word was Papa, as Papa was his idol / Everleigh who was Papa’s little sassy princess / Connor who was Papa’s Lego partner and wheel man / Austin who loved watching movies on Papa’s lap, and just recently precious baby Jordyn – who Papa got to cuddle once and cry over.
One of Bill’s greatest pleasures was helping his son build his house this past year. Everyday he’d excitedly head out to the house and oversee the construction. It was his happy place, and he took great pride and joy in that house. Just a few beers were had needless to say. He missed it when it was finished so he took to driving dump truck – which he did every day for two months with a smile on his face and a bounce in his step.
By late fall Bill started noticing his speech wasn’t what it should be and he was losing strength in his legs. Regardless, he’d hop in his dump truck and happily drive the day away. On December 6th Bill was diagnosed with a brain tumour which after a biopsy, was confirmed to be an inoperable, aggressive, brain cancer. With the loss of the use of his legs, his speech, and any enjoyment in life, it was Bill’s wish to go peacefully on his own terms.
Bill will be missed by so many – his friends, his Tim Hortons crew, his camping buddies, his work buddies, his loving brothers and sister, his in-laws who truly loved him as a brother, his grandchildren, his children and their spouses but most of all his loving soul mate Dianne.
Friends and relatives are invited for a casual Come & Go from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023, at the Royal Canadian Legion, Walkerton, in honour and remembrance of Bill.
As expressions of sympathy, it is Bill’s wish that you take a moment to hug someone special and tell them you love them.
