Beverley Ludwig Borins June 5,1923 – August 31, 2023
Bev died in her home, surrounded by her family and her Inuit art and cultural mask collections.
Daughter of Samuel Ludwig and Dorothy Frankel, predeceased by her brother Dr. Bernard Ludwig, husband of 52 years Sidney Borins, and daughter Irene Borins Ash. Loving mother of Sandford (Beth Herst) and Michael (Heidi Bergstrom) and devoted grandmother of Alex and Nathaniel Borins and Adryan (Kevin Purcell) and Haley Bergstrom-Borins.
An excellent student, Bev intended to go to law school. Her parents could afford to support only one child in university, and she deferred to Bernard. Bev and Sidney married in 1943. While raising three children, Bev pursued several artistic hobbies, ultimately choosing mosaics. Her murals of the 12 tribes of Israel hang in the Baycrest Hospital.
Bev joined the workforce in the mid-60s as an entrepreneur. In the early 70s she established Up the Wall, a boutique across the street from the St. Lawrence Market, initially selling weavings and wall hangings. Soon Bev began to focus on Inuit sculpture and Anishnabe graphics. After selling Up the Wall in 1984, Bev continued her passion for Inuit art. She took Michael and Irene with her on trips to Nunavut. She made major donations to the University of Toronto and University of Guelph. She also designed and sewed an Inuit parka and several Haida-style button blankets.
To the end, Bev retained her energy, enthusiasm for life, keen intelligence, and an outlook and voice much younger than her years. Bev had many friends, not only her contemporaries, but also younger people who were inspired by her life and experience.
Bev lived with myelodysplasia for eight years. She received expert care from Dr. Karen Yee and the transfusion unit at Princess Margaret Hospital and Drs. Howe and Melnitzer and nurses from the Sinai Health Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care. Michael Borins organized the 24/7 care that enabled her to stay in her home, and we thank her compassionate caregivers including Michael Borins, Jean Fitth, Cecilia Pring, Leslie Aquino, Kareen Ronco, Adryan Bergstrom-Borins, Kevin Purcell, Adrianne Smith, and Elayne Nusbaum.
Funeral at Holy Blossom Temple on Sunday, September 3 at 11 a.m. followed by interment at Holy Blossom Memorial Park. Shiva arrangements to be announced.
