Betty Perry Obituary
Elizabeth (Betty) Leah Hamelin was born in Tisdale, Sk. on December 12, 1929. She was the 5th and youngest child of Omer and Alma Hamelin. They lived near Zenon Park and she attended Silver Stream and Goyer schools. Since they lived right across the road from Goyer school their family boarded school teachers. Her Dad farmed and worked in the bush in the winter. They didn’t have much but they were a very close and happy family. There was always food on the table and handmade clothes. She remembers her Mom making her a red dress every year to wear to the Christmas concert.
After school days, she moved to Tisdale to train for a nurse. In her second year she had no money to continue her training so she moved to Flin Flon to live with her sister and family (Fred and Alice Minter).
There was no road so she went by train from Tisdale via Hudson Bay and La Pas. She worked at the lunch counter at Royal Drugs for two years. Little did she know that this is where she would meet Norman, the love of her life. They enjoyed life in Flin Flon going to old time dances at the Legion Hall and Jubilee Hall on Saturday nights, dancing to the Blue Skirt Waltz and Tennessee Waltz. There were movies during the week and also the hockey and curling rinks. They enjoyed going to Phantom Lake, where they carved their initials on a tree.
In the spring of 1951 she moved to Nipawin and boarded with Clarke and Dorothy Worsley. She worked for Frank Radloff at the Servu Store. Norman and Betty were married in the Nipawin United Church on December 5, 1951. She moved to the farm that Norman had purchased in 1948. They returned to Flin Flon seasonally. Betty worked as a receptionist at the desk of the Royal Hotel. She was warned to never rent a room to a diamond driller. She didn’t tell them that she was married to one.
Betty taught Sunday school and was a C.G.I.T leader at the United Church in White Fox. She worked side by side with Norman on the farm driving grain trucks and tractors. She worked as a clerk for Tom Levins at Nipawin Hardware. They moved to Pioneer House in Nipawin in September 2012 and both moved into long term care in 2019.
Betty was a loving and caring person and was the best wife, mother and grandmother that anyone could wish for. She passed away peacefully at Pineview Lodge on May 11, 2024 with Janice by her side.
Betty was predeceased by Norman, her husband of 68 years. Her parents and four older siblings.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son in law, Janice and Neal Evans. Her granddaughters, Jodie & Darren Keough and Shawna & Ryan Reynolds. Her great grandchildren Kole Bohnen, Cierra Keough, Carter Reynolds and Jack Reynolds.
