It is with much love that we say a fond farewell to Betty Penn Millins who passed peacefully on February 13, 2023, surrounded by family and supported by caring staff at Point Grey Hospital. Betty is predeceased by her parents C E John Millins & Beatrice Penn, husbands Don Fields and Dudley Darling, fiancé Howard Naphtali, son Michael and granddaughter Katrina. She is survived by her children Daphne (Bob), Daryl (John), Leslie (Blaine); Grand-children Sean, Corry (Amber), Jordan (Airiane), Sarah, Ives, Alana (Robson), Makayla (Trevor), Samara; Step-grandchildren Chris and Callie; and Great-grandchildren Charles, Caleb, Kaius, Kaeden and Kingdom.
Born in Nanaimo, BC, Betty grew up in Victoria, attended St. Margarets School and Victoria College (1993), then earned degrees at the University of British Columbia (BA (Econ)1944) and University of Toronto (BSW (Social Work) 1946 and MSW (psychiatric /medical social work) 1952). Supporting the vulnerable in society, Betty thrived in her profession at the BC Ministry of Human Resources/Vancouver Children’s Aid Society (1956-76); and George Pearson Centre and BC Rehabilitation Society (1974-93). She advocated for all through her many affiliations and passions including as long-standing director on the Boards of the Canadian Red Cross, Osteoporosis Society of BC (1989-1994) and Cheshire Homes Society of BC (1974-91). As noted in Who’s Who of Canadian Women, “Betty’s professional and personal lives have revolved around the care of others, be they family, clients, or the public in general. She has continually directed her tremendous energy into improving the world of others”.
Betty loved to garden, play tennis and read biographies. Pets of all sorts filled her life as did her love to travel. She had a formidable grip which served her in tennis and hugs! Betty was the centrepoint for family discussions, gatherings, and life’s challenges. No matter what the situation, Betty was always there; with her dry wit and piercing questions, she helped to make everything a little better. Betty was full of life, fun and curiosity to the end, enjoying visits with family and friends and strolls along the beach. She will remain forever in our hearts, minds and souls.
A celebration of life will be held. See www. kearneysfs.com/obituaries for updates, and to leave messages. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: Covenant House (www.covenanthousebc.org). Betty’s final resting place will be with her father at Hatley Memorial Gardens in Victoria, BC. The family thanks the entire, exceptional staff at Point Grey Hospital for two years of caring for and creating a whole new community around Betty.
