Betty Bruce Obituary
Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Bruce passed peacefully away at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital on December 29th, 2023 at the age of 88 years, with her loving family by her side.
She was a teacher for 35 years and informally, her whole life. She loved to be approached by past students and remembered them all. A lot of her best friends were met during her teaching career in Stephenville. Betty dearly loved her children, grandchildren and her 6 precious great-grandchildren. For many years she was an active member in the church and her faith was very important to her. Some of her passions included hockey, both as a hockey mom and a Bruins fan, and she was intrigued with politics.
She leaves to mourn with many precious memories: five children: Kenneth (Marty) Bruce of Fort McMurray, Brenda (Bernie) Buckle of Massey Drive, Patricia (Tony) Wakeham of Kippens, Linda (John) Kattenbusch of Gander and Wanda (Jim) Myler of Saint John NB; 9 grandchildren: Stephanie (Matthias), Jason (Genevieve), Christopher (Jessica), Steven (Brittany), Erin (Tyler), Sarah, Nicole, Mark and Mackenzie; 6 great grandchildren: Hayden, Liam, Nicolas, Emma, Drew, and Henry; and siblings: David Slaney and Carm Slaney; special friends Ed and Betty Strickland; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
Betty was predeceased by: husband Patrick; parents Mary and David Slaney; and sisters: Anna Foley and Clara Froude.
Visitation will take place on Monday, January 1st from 7:00-9:00 PM and on Tuesday, January 2nd from 2:00-4:00 PM at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 3rd at 10:30 AM from St. Stephen’s Parish, West Street. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery.
As expression of sympathy donations in Betty’s memory can be made to the Janeway Children’s Hospital.
Special thanks to Dr. Dwyer and NP Wendy Squires and all the nurses at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital especially Callie and Stephanie who were so kind and compassionate during her final hours.
