CHANYI: Betty Barbara (Szilagyi) – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty (Szilagyi) Chanyi in her 79th year, at Sakura House Hospice, with her daughter at her side, after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Betty’s gracious presence, exceptional leadership and all-embracing love will be remembered and upheld by her best friend and precious daughter, Lisa Chanyi-Baruth, cherished son-in-law, Bob Baruth and grandson, Ben Baruth, whom she adored. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Betty Szilagyi and the love of her life, Alex. Betty leaves behind her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Julie (Chanyi) Terdik, her nephew and niece John Jr. and Lisa Terdik and their daughter Jamie, the late James Terdik, and Dr. Kerry Sinkowski, and their children Joe and Olivia. Betty was also the proud godmother to Stephen Szucs.
Betty selflessly and humbly gave of herself to all those touched by her vibrant life. She made friends easily and kept each dear friendship in an honoured and special place in her heart.
Betty began her teaching career at the age of 19 after attending London Teacher’s College. She taught at St. Williams, Langton, Walsh, Houghton Public Schools and the Delhi Enrichment Centre. Afterwards, Betty served as vice-principal at Walsh and Houghton, then became principal at Nixon and Windham Central Public Schools. She ended her teaching career opening Lynndale Heights Public School in Simcoe. After her retirement, Betty became the full-time caregiver of her beloved Alex before his passing in 2008.
Beyond her teaching career, Betty immersed herself in countless community-building efforts, giving generously of her time. She believed that any job worth doing was worth doing to the very best of her ability. She instilled that virtue in others and modeled it to her family, friends and community. Betty has always been a nature lover, and was very proud of the time she spent at Birds Canada working to increase the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of birds in Canada. She served as chair, committee member, and secretary of many groups within Norfolk including the Norfolk Family Health Team, Port Rowan/South Walsingham Heritage Association, Backus Museum Committee, the Norfolk Field Naturalists, Long Point Basin Land Trust, Norfolk County Ward One Councillor, and was a founding member of the Port Rowan Farmers’ Market. Betty was also active with several church organizations over the years, helping with fundraising efforts. Betty will leave a legacy of dedication, service, commitment and love for her community.
In her “spare time” Betty was an avid gardener, birder, loved canning/preserving, and when anyone was ill, recovering from an illness, or having a difficult time, you could count on her to be at your door with food or a care package. All who knew Betty, knew she loved to entertain and could whip together a meal for two or 20 in no time. In the simplest, most intimate moments, and in profoundly influential ways, Betty Chanyi inspired and blessed all those with whom she crossed souls.
Relatives and friends will be received in the Jeffrey W. Glendinning Funeral Home, 36 Front Rd. Port Rowan on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Funeral Service will be conducted from the Clark Chapel of the funeral home on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00am. Interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery, Port Rowan.
The family would like to expressed gratitude to the incredible staff and volunteers at Sakura House Hospice, who made Betty’s final days comfortable, happy, and peaceful, the Verspeeten Cancer Clinic at London Health Sciences Centre, and Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital. Special Thanks to Pat Baruth, Robin Durrant, Christine Giesbrecht, Nancy Gregg, Marcie Hader, Doctors Bak, Lanahen, and Schreier, and all the wonderful health providers and community care providers who gave excellent care to Betty during the last four months. Words cannot express how much we appreciated your care, guidance and support throughout this monumentally difficult battle with this terrible disease.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate, please consider: Sakura House Hospice, Birds Canada, LPRCA Memorial Forest, Port Rowan South Walsingham Heritage Association or a charity of your choice. Personal condolences can be posted at www.gffh.ca
