Passed away in her 89th year Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Home (Ottawa) having suffered from the ravages of dementia for a number of years.
Beloved wife of Frank for over 66 years. Dear daughter of the late Muriel and Stephen Schafer of Maple Creek, Sask. Sister of the late Arthur (late Aline) Schafer of Maple Creek; Carol Anne (late Gratton Murray) of Saskatoon, and Darlene of Edmonton, Alta. Mother of Sandra (Robert Walters) of Guelph, Ont., Cynthia (Dieter Bredfeldt) of Carleton Place, Ont., and Dasha (Charles Elliott) of Ottawa, Ont. Loving and doting Nana to Grant (Kelsey) and Douglas Walters, Julia (Neil Kelly), Victoria (Pierce Conroy) and Olivia (Linden Cote) Bredfeldt. and Astrid and Sabine Elliott. Great-Nana to Bernadette, Xavier, Damian and Felicity Kelly; Joseph and Amelia Conroy, and Lucas Cote.
Betty’s roots were deep in the prairies; born on May 30, 1935, in Maple Creek at a time when her parents were farming in nearby Senate. In 1951, the Schafer family moved to Maple Creek where Betty completed high school. Betty later graduated from Nurses Training at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital in 1956, fulfilling her dream of a long career nursing in Saskatchewan, Montreal and lastly, for 22 years at the maternity ward of Riverside Hospital (Ottawa) retiring in 1995. A recent nursing graduate, she safely delivered her cousin’s baby on her own. It was very risky as the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. Betty was very proud of this accomplishment. Throughout her career, Betty demonstrated a sincere devotion to the care and compassion of anyone entrusted to her care.
Betty had an extraordinarily strong faith and religious convictions. The family warmly remembers Betty sitting in the morning sun reading daily devotionals and scriptures.
Betty loved all kinds of music, especially country music, with trips to Nashville and a passion for Sonny James. When the music played, Betty headed to the dance floor. She and Frank enjoyed many years of square dancing together.
Betty always loved babies: from her time in maternity nursing to welcoming her grand babies. Despite Betty’s diminished capacity in recent years, her seven great grandchildren gave her tremendous joy.
Adaptability was Betty’s middle name. This “dyed-in-the-wool prairie girl” readily took to big city life when she married Frank on Christmas Eve 1957 and immediately moved to Montreal from the west. She also embraced Frank’s cultural heritage with trips to the Czech Republic, cooking Czech dishes, and participating in many nearby Czech events. And boy, could Betty polka!
Betty’s easy going nature, warmth and loving spirit will be missed.
The family extends a special thanks to the staff at St. Patrick’s Home who provided exceptional compassionate care, as well Fiona Clarke (Seniors Solution).
Visitation October 28 at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 MacLeod from 2-3pm. A celebration of Betty’s life and reception to be held following the visitation. For those who are unable to attend in person, please click here to view the livestream. Funeral Mass, Holy Name of Mary, in Almonte at 9am on November 2. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Ridgetown, Ont.
In memory of her mother, Muriel Schafer, mother-in-law Antonie Korycan, and sister-in-law Mary Montgomery, all of whom succumbed to cancer, it was Betty’s wish that those who would like to make a contribution in her memory do so by making a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.
