SCHERTZING, Hubertus ‘Bert’ – On Monday, August 19, 2024 at the age of 74, Hubertus (Bert) Cornelius Schertzing moved on to the next chapter of his life, in Heaven. He is survived by his wife Christine (nee Wlad) of almost 49 years, as well as his three children Ryan (Darlene), Erin (Kreso Tomas), and Mandy (Frank). He had seven grandchildren; Owen, Alyssa, Jean-Paul, Lukas, Nicole, Viktoria and Rubi. Bert was the oldest of nine children and immigrated to Canada from Holland with his parents in 1953. He is survived by his brothers Bill, John (Anne), Jerry (Carole), sisters Rina (Bob Dickson), Annette (Cody Hardy), Barbara (Brian Pekrul), and Yvonne (Bobby Kraliz). He was predeceased by his mother Margaret (nee Groot) 2023, father Cees Schertzing (1992) and brother Tony, and sister-in-law Jane in 2003. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends. Bert was raised in Port Colborne on Weaver Road and worked on his family vegetable farm from a young age. This gave him a good work ethic and he developed great memories and bonds with his siblings. Bert started his career with Department of Highways as a surveyor and then studied to be a financial planner for Mutual Life of Canada in 1978. While working he received many awards and recognitions. He was a lifetime member of the Life Underwriters Association, CLU, CH.FC, RHU. He developed many relationships with his clients and always went above and beyond until his retirement due to his illness. Bert lived life to the fullest and always tried to lead a balanced life between work, family, church and his community. He was a great husband, father, friend and proud Opa. He coached soccer, hockey as well as sponsoring teams. He enjoyed watching his children and now grandchildren involved in their sporting events. He was a member of Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, and Rotary which he served as President for two years and he was also involved with Our Lady of Scapular Church for many years. Bert loved to play tennis and was a member of White Oaks for many years, it was a sad day when he had to give up his locker. Bert loved to travel and go sightseeing, making the most out of life and had just returned from a two week cruise of the British Isles. Bert was well known in the community especially at Sobey’s. Heaven has received a special angel and he will be sadly missed. Friends are invited to join the family at the PATTERSON FUNERAL HOME, 6062 Main St. Niagara Falls, visiting Thursday August 22, 2024 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday August 23, 2024 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of the Scapular Church. Cremation will follow, with the Rite of Committal at a later date in Fairview Cemetery. In memory of Bert, memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Club of Niagara, and would be sincerely appreciated by his family. Online condolences at pattersonfuneralhome.com
