Bert Marton Lukacsy. (Sept 9 1927 – Jan 24 2024)
Son. Brother. Husband. Father. Grandfather. Uncle.
Also known as Mr L; The King of State St; Big Bert; The Whistler; Uncle Bert; Grampa Bert; Pops and Dad.
Born in Bridgeburg, Ontario (now Fort Erie) to Hungarian immigrant parents. At the age of 14, he put himself through trade school in Hamilton and became a tool and die maker. He worked as a machinist at GM as well as Page Hersey, Atlas Steeles (and a few other places in between). He loved his job at GM and didn’t want to retire. He often said “if you love your job, it’s not work”.
He had a love and passion for music. From the late 1950’s to 1970’s, he was a popular DJ at Welland’s Holy Ghost hall, Ukrainian Hall, The Welland Club and Morgan’s Point dance hall; he had the patrons dance the night away; sometimes until dawn.
So much to say about Bert (aka dad). He was a grumpy bear and a teddy bear. Stern but fun. Very wise and gave advice (often unsolicited). He loved to read; anything re: automobiles, “Hi Fi” systems and music were his topics of choice, and he had an awesome stereo (just ask the neighbours). One of his most favourite past-times was listening to the Hungarian gypsies play their music at the various venues in Niagara. He passed on his love of music and dancing to his children. Back in the day, he and Marj attended dinner dances (almost) every weekend. If they weren’t out dancing, they danced at home in the kitchen. The Welland Hungarian Hall was a big part of keeping us connected to our (Hungarian) heritage. Family was important and we often heard “just get along” and “don’t fight, make nice”. He had a wicked sense of humour; the life of the party and always had a joke to tell. He loved his cars; driving and working on them (he owned Hudsons, Packard, Meteor, Mercury, Plymouth, Corvair, VWs and Cadillacs). Swimming at Nickel Beach in the Summer, or Cross Street pool, when the beach wasn’t an option, made Summer nights fun – as a child, jumping off his shoulders into the water will always be a great memory. And there was always ice cream afterwards! My dad loved good food and was a pretty good cook; especially if mom was away at supper time. A stop at Tim Horton’s, on Niagara Street was a “must” every day after a long shift at GM. A treat when we were able to tag along. Long after his retirement, a Timmies visit was almost a daily occurrence.
The loss of Alice Marjorie (aka Marj) in November 2007, his wife and our mother, left him a partially empty man. Yet he didn’t want to miss out on any of his children’s adventures and stories, so he held on for an additional 16+ years.
In his 97th year, he took his last breath. With his children at his side, he made his final trip to see Marj.
Predeceased by his parents Antal and Elizabeth; wife Marjorie (nee Holcomb); sister Margaret Bendas (Zoli), sister Elizabet O’Neill (Jerry) and brother Steven (Victoire); son-in-law Dr. Norman Aurlick; nephew/godson David O’Neill (Susan) and niece Diana Bendas.
He is survived by his five children, Patti (Paul) Fagan, Brenda (the late Dr. Norman Aurlick), Marton (Lisa), Susan (James) Pozhke, Paul (Joelle); loving grandfather of Krista and David Sirianni, Mallory and Samuel Aurlick, Olivia and Emily Lukacsy, Alexandra and Maxwell Schenitzki; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Many thanks to all of the care staff at Woodlands of Sunset. You helped make this sensitive but reality of life (end of) time much easier for our family. We are so appreciative for all your care and attentiveness to our father during the last four years while he was a resident.
Rest easy pops. Szeretlek Apa (Love you dad)
The family will receive their friends at the H. L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 11 a.m. for a time of reflections and memories.
