Obituary
Bernice Fraser
October 23, 1936-July 5, 2023
On Wednesday, July 5, 2023 we lost the most beautiful, loving and gentle person we have ever known, our sweet angel, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Bernice Fraser, left this world at the age of 86.
Born in North Sydney on October 23, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Winnifred (Piehl) Curtis of North Sydney and step-daughter of the late Eileen Curtis of North Sydney. She was predeceased by her sister, Shirley Cox, North Sydney and brothers, Blaise Curtis, Calgary, Bruce Curtis, Texas, and twin brother, Bernard “Bernie” Curtis, Balls Creek.
She is survived by her soul mate and true love of her life, husband, Simon Fraser, North Sydney, her daughter Lisa Fraser Hill (Luke), Georges River, her son Lawrence Fraser (Krishanda Zimmer), Big Pond, granddaughter Shirley Hill, Georges River and grandson Luke Hill, North Sydney; brother, Patrick Curtis, Moncton and sister, Linda Stewart (Donald), Merigomish.
Bernice grew up in North Sydney and married Simon “Dede” Fraser of Point Aconi in May, 1960. They resided in Toronto for a year before returning to North Sydney in 1962 where they resided in the family home where Bernice was born, dedicating her entire life to raising her family with the greatest love and devotion.
As a young girl she attended Business School and was employed at Thompson and Sutherlands in North Sydney as a secretary and stenographer with her best friend, Joan (O’Quinn) Curtis who soon became her sister-in-law, marrying her twin brother, Bernard “Bernie” Curtis. Bernice and Simon enjoyed many years with her brother Bernie and Joan travelling around the Island, sharing meals, and family events and parties. Her twin brother, Bernie adored her as she did him throughout their lives.
Bernice was a talented baker and was well known for her fancy short bread cookies, pies, squares and many other treats she prepared and always had on hand for family and friends visiting her home. Her extreme kindness, love and great desire to please others was well known by all who were blessed to have known her.
Bernice and her sister, Shirley had the closest bond two sisters could ever have in this life. They were very talented at knitting everything from sweaters, ponchos, to cable knit maxi coats and were employed by Island Crafts in Sydney for many years knitting hundreds of beautiful sweaters. They so enjoyed their work together and were well known in the community for their talent and ability to analyze the most complex patterns, no job being too difficult. They were always together, lived next door to each other and one was rarely seen without the other until Shirley’s passing in 1993 at the young age of 58. The loss of her sister, companion and best friend was truly unbearable for Bernice. With the loving support of her family and friends she was able to grieve this great loss over the coming years.
In 1994 Bernice was overjoyed with the birth of her first grandchild, Shirley Bernice Hill, named in honor of Bernice and her sister, Shirley. Bernice’s love for her granddaughter cannot be put into words. She helped care for Shirley from infancy until her passing. Shirley had the greatest love for her Nanny and was truly her guardian angel in later years making certain she was well cared for and most importantly, spent time with her most everyday.
In February, 1996, Bernice was blessed with her grandson, Luke Fraser Hill. She dedicated every day of her life to caring for her two grandchildren and was like a second mother to both. These were the happiest days of her life. They filled her life with great joy, laughter and love, spending time with her most every day of her life.
Her grandson, Luke began living with his Nanny and Poppy in North Sydney when he was a teenager. Bernice was like a second mother to Luke and their bond was unshakable. She loved him dearly and of course, spoiled him, waited on him regularly and fulfilled his every need at the drop of a hat, at any hour of the day or night. In recent years Luke became his Nanny and Poppy’s fulltime caregiver, returning all of the love and kindness they showed him his whole life. Luke was also his Nanny’s loyal companion and fierce protector, constantly monitoring her every move to ensure she looked after herself. He now cared for and waited on her as she once did for him.
The close bond between Bernice and her grandchildren, Shirley and Luke was truly special, admirable and will always be remembered.
Bernice could not have been more proud of her son, Lawrence George Fraser, world traveller, professional mountain climber, great lover of life and the outdoors from the time he could walk. She looked so forward to his trips home from Alberta at Christmas and in the fall every year, planned for his arrival with great anticipation and would count the days until he was home with her and Simon. She was so happy when Lawrence and
Krishanda finally moved home to Cape Breton several years ago settling in Big Pond. She adored her son and Krishanda “Kris” who always treated her like her own mother.
She was my mother, best friend and trusted confidante. I loved her more than it is possible to put into words. I could always count on her unconditional love, devotion and support in all aspects of my life. She helped us raise our children from infancy and was always there for me whenever I needed her guidance, support and most importantly, her love. She was the kindest, sweetest and most loving person I have ever known. She always thought of others before herself. She was an extraordinarily beautiful person on the inside and out. I truly believe she was a Saint living among us all this time. She will be forever missed by her soulmate, Simon, children, grandchildren, family and friends and all those lives she so gently touched during her time with us, including her friend Kyle who is like one of our family and her special cat “Tabby”.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass for Bernice will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
