Bernard Reginald «Reg» Harrison
1934-2024
Bernard Reginald «Reg» Harrison –
90, of Hants Border passed away in Valley Regional Hospital after a
lengthy battle with dementia on July 3, 2024. Born in Springhill, he
was the son of Oscar and Delila Harrison.
Reg came to the Valley in the 1950s to study at Horton
Academy and Acadia University. He served summer pastorates at
Southampton and West Jeddore and later as student pastor at Avonport
and Lockhartville. He taught at Horton and Avonport before becoming
the first principal of Gaspereau Elementary School. He then served at
Falmouth and Newport Station Elementary Schools before completing his
teaching career at Three Mile Plains. Not ready to retire, he then
went on to work with the Department of Transportation as a Safety
Education Officer and Drivers’ Examiner. For many years, he
loved serving his community through the New Minas and Hantsport Lions
Clubs. God was always a central part of his life especially after
losing his father at a young age. Even though education was his chosen
career as an adult he continued to serve various churches as a guest
pastor when needed. He also was an active member of several local
Baptist churches serving as Deacon and on Boards of
Trustees.
Though choosing to live in the Valley, Springhill always held
a special place in his heart and Elsie’s, so they built a cottage at
Linden beach where they loved to go each summer. There they made many
special lifelong friends and made memories with family and friends.
Always being the social butterfly, whether at the beach with or in the
Valley a pack of cards and a cribbage board was often close at hand.
Luckily, he was able to find a like minded group of cribbage players
that met weekly at various venues. Whenever looking for Reg a good
place to start was usually at the local Tim Hortons with his coffee
group. Following his retirement he also enjoyed volunteering at a
temporary Hantsport satellite office for the RCMP.
Reg is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elsie (Cox);
daughters, Dawn (Ross) Campbell and Paula (Matt) Kimball; son, Peter
(Dana); grandchildren, Greg (Wendy) Campbell, Carey (Morgan) Shields,
Alex, Noah and Jayson Kimball; Carson and Abby Harrison;
great-grandchildren, Justin Baird, Riley, Mackenzie and Brody Shields;
great-great grandchildren, Wynter, Mikey and Violet Baird as well as
several nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to his
parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Flora Belliveau and Iona
Rushton, and several infant siblings. He was the last surviving member
of his immediate family.
Special thanks to Wedgewood House in Kentville for their
loving care for over two and half years and towards the end of his
life the terrific staff at Valley Regional Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take
place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2024 in the White Family
