Bernard Montgomery MacDonald – 79, Debert. It is
with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bernie, or
perhaps Monty, depending on what stage of his life you first met him.
Bernie was born in South Haven and passed away in Truro on April 18,
2024.
Bernie graduated from DeVry University in Toronto and upon
graduation began his lifelong career as a radio technician with
Canadian National Telecommunications. After a couple of years
initially stationed in Newcastle, New Brunswick, Bernie was
transferred back home to Cape North in Northern Cape Breton where he
lived and raised a family for the next 20 years with his beloved wife,
Sharon. His final years working were in Debert where he remained after
retirement.
Bernie was predeceased by his wife, Sharon, and is survived
by his kids, Susan (Rob), Kenzie, Kenton (Johanna) and Vicki, as well
as his grandkids, Jarod, Keegan and Jack.
Cape North was a big part of his life. Many friends were
always around the house playing cards and telling stories. Active in
the community, he was part of Cabot Volunteer Fire Department as well
as running the groomer at North Highlands Nordic Ski
Club.
He had a life-long love of science and puzzles – a stack of
puzzle books were always within reach. He had a reputation for being
good with electronics and was often called upon to help the local
fishing community install or fix their onboard electronics. As a
result, there was a steady supply of fresh fish being dropped at the
door as a thank you.
The past decade his most enjoyed pastime was driving on the
back trails behind his house – listening to the classic
country Antigonish radio station and enjoying a cold beverage. Also, a
creature of habit, he had lunch (usually the same lunch) every week at
Double C Restaurant in Debert which he truly loved. It gives his
family great joy that this was the last meal that he enjoyed
– he would have been happy.
There will be no visitation and a family service will be held
at a later date. Please, no flowers. In lieu, please make a
donation to Diabetes Canada or any charity of your
choice.
