It is with great sadness and deep sorrow that we announce the
death of Beatrice «Leona» Bennett of Grosvenor, beloved wife
and mother, with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren at her bedside.
Leona was born in Mattie Settlement and attended a one-room
schoolhouse in Grosvenor. As a young woman, she moved to
Ontario to work and met the love of her life, Gary. They
married and moved back to Nova Scotia to start their
family.
Mom was a woman of great faith and devotion to God and the
rosary. In troubled times, her advice was «Pray to the
Holy Spirit.» She walked through life with grace and
humility. She was always positive, and she lived her life
joyfully with a kind word for everyone.
Mom enjoyed cooking and baking, there was always fresh bread
and cookies. She loved Sundays after Mass, gathering with
her family around her, playing cards, growing flowers, and watching
the ballgame with Dad. She rocked and sang to her
grandchildren as only a grandmother can.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 60 years,
Gary; her children, Roddy (Karen), Michelle (Joe), Stephen (Denee),
Gerard (Marian), and Vanessa (Chris); 20 grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren; brothers, Bernie (Rose Marie), Pat, Leonard, John
(Maureen), Clarence (Sandy), and Billy (Sharon); sisters, Elizabeth
and Debbie (John); special friend, Madeliene DeGruchy; and many
extended family members and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Benedict and Irene
DeCoste; son-in-law, Bruce Pettipas; sisters, Edith DeCoste and
Maureen Bennett; brothers-in-law, Vince DeCoste and Gerard Bennett;
sisters-in-law, Candy and Rita DeCoste; and father-in-law, Elmer
Bennett.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 to 9pm in C.L. Curry
Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Funeral Mass
will be held Friday at 11:00am in St. Peter’s Church,
Tracadie, with Father John Barry presiding. Burial in the
parish cemetery.
Gary and family would like to thank Kathryn Boyd, NP, Dr.
Emily Rice, and all the members of the VON and Palliative Care team
who gave her such incredible care.
