It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barry Vincent KING on August 3, 2024 at the age of 81. He passed at Hospice Wellington Guelph surrounded by his loving family after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. Barry leaves behind his beloved wife, Pat, whom he had 61 dedicated and loving years of marriage. He was the loving father to Mike (pre-deceased in 2020), daughter Debbie, son Kevin (Tammy), and adoring grandchildren Karen, Josh, Jordan, Ashleigh, Hayleigh and Madison. He was the older brother to Mary Claire Harrold (Jim, pre-deceased in 2022) and uncle to Mathew.
Barry began his career as a Military Police Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, then went on to spend 46 years as a police officer, 20 of those years as a Police Chief. Barry began his police career with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), then joined the Mississauga Police Force and became one of the founding members of the newly formed Peel Regional Police Service. After relocating, Barry became the Police Chief in Sault Ste Marie for nine years before retiring. After the difficult decision to leave the Soo, Barry wanted to return to the community where his policing career began. Barry came out of retirement to become the Police Chief in Brockville for an additional ten years where he was also the Chair or Co-Chair on several high-level committees in Canada. Barry was proud to be one of the first Canadians to be accepted to the FBI National Academy where he graduated in 1982 plus was awarded the Order of Merit of Canada (OOM) and a medal for Police Bravery. Barry’s prestigious career had many high-profile cases which excelled his career. Barry loved meeting new people and had many lifelong friends which is a testament to his personality.
At Barry’s request, there will be a private family service. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Hospice Wellington for your care and compassion. Donations in Barry’s name can be made to Hospice Wellington Guelph or the Canadian Cancer Society.
A tree will be planted in memory of Barry at the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
