Barry Frank Townsend of Brentwood Bay, BC passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Barry was born January 17, 1952 in Manchester England, to parents Frank and Olive Townsend. He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie, daughters Carley (Ben), and Andrea (Mike), grandchildren Zachary, Holly and Maeve, sister Lynn (Walt), nephew Bryan (Samara), niece Kendall, and his treasured aunt, Renee. He is predeceased by his parents, and sister Nita Townsend.
Barry was an adoring grandfather; he loved spending time with his grandchildren. They always brought a smile to his face and warmed his heart as no other could.
Barry had mastered the art of perseverance, which he practiced through long hikes (he loved hiking the Grand Canyon), running, swimming, biking, marathons, and triathlons (including the 2012 Penticton Ironman).
Barry enjoyed drives in his prized Mazda 6, whether it was a daily coffee outing to McDonald’s, a road trip to Summerland to visit his cherished friend Doug (Barb), or to the Banff/Jasper area to explore trails and hikes. Barry enjoyed flying; he obtained his pilot’s license earlier in his life, and also took skydiving lessons in his later teens (being unsuccessful at keeping this venture a secret from his mother who he knew would not be pleased!)
After completing high school Barry entered the drafting program at Camosun College, and soon after completion of this course he obtained a draftsman position with the provincial government. Several years later he decided to establish his own business, Carmanah Construction, named after Carmanah Creek on the West Coast Trail, a hike he completed several times. He then pursued a career as an electrician, mainly working as a marine electrician with Victoria Shipyards. Barry was a “dang good” electrician who took pride in his work. When in a senior position with the shipyard, Barry always advocated for his crew and coworkers. He prioritized others’ needs before his own, and valued the relationships he established not only throughout his electrical career, but throughout his life. Barry also utilized his electrical training and knowledge of construction in his personal life. Over the course of several years he built three beautiful homes for his family, the first being completed when he was 25 years old. Barry always did a wonderful job in completing any task he undertook, whether big or small, although he often let it be known that computers were his nemesis!
In Barry’s retirement he moved into a condominium in Brentwood Bay. He loved talking with fellow residents about “electrical” things or any other matters pertaining to the building. He enjoyed getting to know his neighbours, establishing relationships, and helping his condo family in any way he could. Barry could often be found in the workshop downstairs, where he continued his passion for woodworking through crafting special pieces for his grandchildren.
Barry will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends, and all who knew him. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Pawlik and Dr. Liebscher, in addition to those who supported Barry at the BC Cancer Clinic, Peninsula Community Health Services, Victoria Hospice, and Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
As per Barry’s request there will be no celebration of life. A burial date will be posted at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation to BC Children’s Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
