Barbara Joanne (Sands) Wright died on January 26 in Toronto in her 93rd year. She is predeased by her husband William Charles Wright (1988), her parents Norman and Betty Sands, her stepmother Ruth Sands and her brothers David and Alan Sands. In 2020 she lost her oldest son Norman to a glioblastoma, something she was not able to process. Beloved mother of Bruce and Elizabeth, dear mother-in-law to Barbara Allen (Norman’s wife) and Michael Piernitzki (Elizabeth’s husband). Loving grandmother to Zachary and Nicholas Piernitzki and Cooper Wright.
Barbara became the indomitable matriarch of the family. She spoke her mind and was cute, funny, generous, devoted to her family and utterly irreplaceable. Barbara graduated from Havergal College and the University of Toronto. She lived most of her life in the family homestead in Lawrence Park, Toronto, and, for many summers, on the family’s Piper’s Hill Farm north of Toronto. A creative in so many areas, Barbara brought her talents and eye to interior decorating, caligraphy, genealogy, birding and gardening. She also loved to travel out to Vancouver often to visit Bruce and tour B.C. We were blessed that she was able stay in her home with the help of her caregiver angels. In lieu of flowers, donations to Sunnybrook Hospital (Odette Centre), Nature Conservancy of Canada or Yorkminster Park Baptist Church would be appreciated. A memorial service will be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge Street, Toronto at 2 p.m. on March 15, 2024.
