Barbara Jean Bryans Burns
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved Barb (Barbie) – loving mother, wife, sister, niece, aunt, friend and soon to be grandmother. Barb passed away suddenly in her home in the Blue Mountains on August 7, 2024. She was born in Seaforth, ON July 15, 1952, to loving parents Dr. William Russel Bryans and Helena Elizabeth (Drager) Bryans and was the youngest sister to Keith, Franklin and Phyllis (Bryans) Armitage. Barbie grew up in Seaforth as an energetic, fun-loving girl with a passion for riding horses, playing various sports, spending time with friends and spent summers in her local pool lifeguarding. She was cherished in her community for her zest for life and caring attitude towards all. Barb was an active member of Girl Guides throughout high school and proudly achieved her Gold Cord.
She enjoyed many adventures sailing with her brother Franklin and his family around Georgian Bay. She loved to spend time travelling with her sister Phyllis and her family.
Barb attained her bachelors’ degree at McMaster University and later attended Simon Fraser University for her teaching certificate. She taught special education and home economics in various locations across Canada including Haida Gwaii, Lutherwood, Waterloo and Mississauga. She also taught for 3 years in Bermuda. Her joyous energy and thoughtful care brought on a special bond with each student and created a lasting impact in many of their lives.
Barb met Dr. Larry Burns on the ski slopes of Blue Mountain in 1989 and the two married in July 1993. Barb acted as a loving friend and support to Larry’s son Ryan and to his daughter Danielle who passed in a boating accident on August 4, 1991. Barb and Larry lived in Mississauga, then moved to Blue Mountain in 1999 where Larry continued his dentistry career, practicing in Meaford. Barb and Larry were delighted to welcome their daughter Renata in 1995 who was raised with compassion and a sense of adventure. After Renata graduated from the University of Waterloo, Barb and Larry supported her enthusiastically in her career as a helicopter pilot.
Her strong passion for her community brought her to volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years, organizing events and fundraising.
Barb enjoyed spending winter weekends skiing with her family and friends out of Toronto Ski Club at Blue Mountain. Her summers were often spent at the family cottage on the Severn River where she enjoyed boating, rowing, swimming and stargazing.
Her adventurous spirit and pure soul will never be forgotten. She will forever be in our hearts, and we will continue to spread the joy she brought to us all.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation.
A celebration of life will be held at the Toronto Ski Club at 1 p.m. on Saturday September 7, 2024.
