Barbara Lawlor Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara “Barb” Lawlor, who left us on Friday, October 11 at the Saint John Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Saint John, NB on June 11, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (née Moore) Mackin.
Growing up in Lakewood, Barb’s life was shaped by her early experiences in the bustling Mackin Bakery, where she learned the art of baking from her mother and carried on special family recipes.
Her strong faith guided her throughout her journey. As a proud member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), Barb dedicated herself to helping others in times of need. She was affectionately known as the «Mayor of Hampton Manor,» where she lovingly raised her family. An organizer and planner at heart, she was always at the forefront of community initiatives, particularly during election seasons, tirelessly working to rally support for the Liberal Party. Barb had a special fondness for music, which often filled her home and heart.
A long-time member of the Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club (TSA), she created countless joyful memories on and off the ice. One of her favorite pastimes was visiting the City Market, where she would greet countless familiar faces, relishing the sense of community. A lover of Saint John and its rich history, family and friends were everything to her. Her annual “Wickham Weekend” gatherings with her girlfriends were a treasured tradition, kept sacred and full of laughter.
Barb’s Irish roots were a source of pride, and she played a vital role in founding the Mackin Reunion, a beloved event that brought family together to share stories and celebrate their heritage. She was also actively involved with the Irish Colleens’ annual dinner at the Delta, helping to raise funds for community and local hospitals.
Barb traveled extensively, exploring the beauty of Ireland, Australia, Hawaii, Thailand, and Russia, among other places. Her cherished camp on Washademoak Lake in the Narrows is filled with lasting memories of family gatherings and laughter.
Throughout her life, Barb held various jobs, but her most important role was that of a devoted mother. She nurtured her family with love, creating a wonderful life that we will forever be grateful for.
Barb is survived by her three children, Michael (Monique) Lawlor, Carolyn (Perry) Ramsay, and Peter Lawlor; her sister, Constance Gauthier; and her brother, Philip Mackin. She was a proud grandmother to Greg Jellison, Stefanie (Dave) Kennedy, Katie (Dan) Tibbetts, Brianne, Aaron, and Meaghan Lawlor, Seth and Lily Ramsay. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren Evan, Liam, Briar, and Emmett Tibbetts, Paige Jellison, Madison and Harper Kennedy, along with several nieces and nephews.
Barb was predeceased by her husband Gerald (Bud), her daughter Elaine, her sister Katherine Ramsey, and her brothers James, Michael, and Richard Mackin.
A special thank you to the care team and staff at Chateau Champlain for the past four years, as well as to the staff on 3DS and 4AN. We are especially grateful to the Palliative Care Team, including physicians and nursing staff, for your wonderful care, compassion, and kindness. Your support has given us a profound sense of peace.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424) where visitation will take place on Tuesday, October 15 from 2 PM – 8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 16 at 11 AM at St. Pius X / Holy Redeemer Parish. A private family interment will be held later.
Donations in her memory may be made to St. Pius X Parish Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
