Barbara «Barb» Bernardo, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2024, at University Gates. She lived a life marked by devotion to her family and a commitment to education. Beloved wife of 62 years to Ron who predeceased her in 2020. Their enduring partnership was filled with mutual respect and love, setting a profound example for their family and friends. Her family was her pride and joy, and her love for them knew no bounds. Amazing mother to Ann (Greg) Hummel, Pat Lund (Mike Corrigan), Paul Bernardo (Kim Kugler), Janet Mantynen and Derek Bernardo.
Much loved grandma to Samantha (Sam), Matthew (Lauren), Scott (Stephanie), and Jacob Hummel, Eli(2019), Thomas (Olivia), Rachel,and Katharina (Anthony) Lund, Mark (Lindsay), Steven (Karen), Michele,and Makayla Mantynen, Amanda (Nathan) and Paige Bernardo. Outstanding great-grandma to great-grandchildren: Blakeney Strong, Joelle and Kendall Mantynen, Buddy Hummel.
Dear aunt to many nieces and nephews. Lovingly remembered by many friends.
Predeceased by her parents Lorne and Frances Young, siblings Catherine and George Young and in-laws Alvin and Norman Bernardo and Joanne Young.
Barb’s deep and abiding friendships were a testament to her ability to nurture profound and lasting relationships throughout her life. Throughout the years, but especially in the last couple of years, her friend Marny has been a constant source of comfort, companionship, encouragement and witty conversation.
Barb, a woman small in stature but mighty in spirit, is leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and inspiration. Her intuitive nature and optimism touched everyone she met, especially children who were the angels of her heart.
Barb’s passion for teaching spanned over five decades at the WCDSB. Her joy in spending her days with her JK kids was obvious. She was fluent in «children talk»; her classroom was a place of growth, understanding, and endless curiosity, where every child felt valued and heard.
Barb’s faith was a guiding light, and she lived each day with joy and gratitude. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. Barb will be remembered for her wit, intellect, patience and the warmth she extended to all who knew her. Her legacy will continue to influence and inspire, even as she is dearly missed.
Though we mourn her passing, we celebrate Barb’s remarkable life, cherishing the memories of her indomitable spirit, her boundless love, and her gentle soul. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as she finds her angels in heaven, watching over us all.
The family wishes to thank the staff at University Gates for their warmth and care and a special thank you to all her caregivers over the last two years who assisted in keeping her sense of learning, independence, adventure and passion for living strong.
We would also like to thank Kim, her special daughter-in-law who provided an unwavering commitment to Barb’s well-being.
At Barb’s request, cremation has taken place and the funeral will be a private family gathering.
