1933-2023
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our father,
grandfather and great-grandfather, Austin C. Kelly, of McAdam, NB on
September 18, 2023. Austin was the beloved husband of the late Darlene
(Parlee) Kelly and the son of the late Oliver and Maude (MacFarlane)
Kelly.
Born on August 31, 1933 in Carsonville, NB. Austin had just celebrated
his 90th birthday. His childhood was spent on the family farm where he
quickly learned the value of hard work. He graduated from Sus High
School in 1953. He met the love of his life, Darlene, in November of
that year and they married in 1955. The two shared 66 years until her
passing in 2021. Austin graduated from Teachers College in 1954 and
started a long and successful teaching career thereafter. He taught at
schools in Coles Island, Dorchester, Chatham and finally McAdam from
which he retired in 1991 after serving first as Vice Principal and
then Principal. Austin’s quest for learning saw him later
complete a Bachelor of Teaching degree, a Bachelor of Education degree
and Masters of Education degree. Following his lengthy career as an
educator, Austin embarked on a second career in real estate. This
allowed him to keep active and filled his love for interacting with
and helping others.
Austin was a man with a strong work ethic. He was dependable and a
reliable contributor as is evidenced in his involvement with various
boards at his church, in his community and in the political realm. He
always had a garden, loved to be out on the sled or wheeler and was an
avid card player. But most of all, he was a family man. Family was
always his priority and his love was deep and unconditional. He had a
very special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great
grandchildren and he took great pride in all their
accomplishments.
He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Doherty (Charles), Oromocto
Lake, NB and Karen Kelly-Scott (Daniel), Ottawa, ON; four sons, Brian
(Cheryl), Hampton, NB, Andrew (Shirlu), McAdam, NB, Paul (Kelly),
Ottawa, ON and Steven (Nicole), Ottawa, ON; grandchildren, Jeremy
(Amanda), Adam (Karen), Nathan, Kaylee, Nicholas, Emily (Evan),
Patrick (Patrick), Amanda (Shanel), Alissa (Kyle), Andrea (Nathan),
Alynn, Ellecia, Micah, Payton, Ashlyn, Brendan (Richard), Ryan and
Mackenzie; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; a sister
Helen Hatfield, Sus, NB and a brother Harris Kelly, Wheaton
Settlement, NB; a sister-in-law Betty Green and a brother-in-law Allen
Parlee.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by infant
children, Wayne Austin and Carol Agnes; a great grandson Hudson Eales,
sisters Olive Amos (late Robert), Marjorie Mason (late Gordon),
Bernice Mason (late Joseph), Mildred Logan; brothers Arlington (late
Jean), Ralph, Ashley, a sister-in-law Isabelle Kelly; his
parents-in-law Harold and Elma Parlee.
Visiting hours will be held at Rockland Drive United Baptist Church,
30 Rockland Drive, McAdam, NB on Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 2
to 4 and 6 to 8 pm and on Friday, September 22, 2023 from 1:30 to 2:30
pm, followed by the funeral service with Rev. Watson Williams
officiating. Interment at Rockland Cemetery. A reception will be
held at the church.
For those who wish to make a donation in memory of Austin, the family
has suggested Diabetes Canada, Cancer Society, Rockland Drive United
Baptist Church or Kierstead Mountain Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Doherty, Adam Doherty, Nathan Doherty,
Patrick Kelly, Brendan Kelly, Ryan Kelly and Nicholas Scott.
