It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my mother Aune Helen Pontynen (nee Maja) who passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at Hogarth Riverview Manor after a long struggle with dementia, at the age of 92. Aune was born March 30th 1931, the youngest child of Matti and Laimi Maja, who had immigrated from Finland late in the 1800’s. She grew up in Nipigon, where she attended school. Aune’s first job was at The Bay, which she enjoyed very much. She met her husband Eero in Nipigon and were married May 16,1951, and soon after welcomed their daughter Linda to their family. Ten years later, they welcomed their son Raymond into the family. They shared 66 years together until Eero’s passing in 2018. She was a strong woman with many talents, but her main focus was always home, and family. Aune also enjoyed spending time in her gardens which provided many great meals and beautiful flowers. She loved family gatherings especially Sunday dinners and fun times at the campgrounds over the years. Aune is survived by her son Raymond (Donna) grandchildren Jason, Jeremy, Laura (Ryan), great grandchildren Bennett and Hannah. Aune was predeceased by her mother Laimi, her father Matti, her husband Eero, her daughter Linda and son-in-law Mike, her sisters Sylvia (Arnie), Julia (Dalton), Lemmitty (Jack), and brother Matt (Helen). Aune was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all. The family wishes to thank the staff of Spruce at Hogarth for all the care Aune received during her time there. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private interment where she and Eero will be buried together with a private family ceremony.
