Augustine ‘Gus’ Tarrant passed away
peacefully February 14th, 2023, at the age of
94 in Antigonish, NS.
Born in St. Lawrence NL, August 28, 1928, he was one of 9
children born to Patrick and Clara (Shea) Tarrant.
Growing up in St. Lawrence, there was not much work, so he
moved his wife Helen (Molloy) and their young family to Schefferville,
P.Q. to work in the iron ore mines.
They raised their 6 children there. Gus loved the North and
was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved soccer and hockey, and he
coached many youth teams.
After retiring from IOC in 1993, they moved to Nova Scotia
for a couple of years. Then they found their retirement home in Elliot
Lake, ON, for the last almost 30 years, and he and friends continued
hunting and fishing for several years.
Predeceased by his loving wife Helen of 67 years, he moved to
NS to his son Gord’s and daughter-in-law Lola’s in
2020 to be cared for until he moved into the Maples Supportive Living
Home in Antigonish for his last year.
Gus was predeceased by his parents; 2 brothers, Alex and Pat;
3 sisters, Fluorina, Ella, and Carmel.
He is survived by his 6 children, Alan (Bernice),
Amherstburg, ON; Ted (Sandy), Calgary; Ella (Terry), Beaumont, AB;
Gord (Lola), Havre Boucher; Ruth (Mike), Collette, NB; and
Tim, Elliot Lake, ON.
Also survived by his devoted younger brother, Cyril of
Antigonish, who spent almost every day of his last year with him; 2
sisters, Madeleine and Margaret of Ontario; 12 grandchildren and 19
great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews who all loved him
dearly.
Cremation has taken place. As per his wishes there will be no
public visitation or service.
A private family celebration of life will be held in the
future.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Antigonish Town
& County Palliative Care Society.
