Obituary
WICKENS, Augusta Elizabeth A. – The children of Augusta E. A. Wickens announce her gentle passing in the Meadows Nursing Home on March 27, 2023, at the age of 94. She was born October 1, 1928, to Elmer and Mary (Cunningham) Newell of Newellton, CSI, NS. Mamma was a young bride at 19 and a year later her first born child of seven arrived. She was a loving, devoted mother to her “brood”, but really blossomed as a person when she returned to teaching in her late thirties. She devoted her life to her community and her church. As a diabetic she volunteered office work and fundraising for Diabetes Canada. She also canvassed for Heart & Stroke and others. She was a Bible teacher and prayer warrior. Serving her Lord was a defining part of her life and was reflected in the way she often helped those in need, no matter the situation. When Dad became involved in politics, she was there by his side. She loved to read, knit, quilt and do crossword puzzles. She and Dad would often entertain several of their grandchildren for overnighters, a feat that we, now with grandchildren of our own, find remarkable. She was always busy, baking brown bread, one of her specialties, entertaining as many family members as would fit in her house at Christmas and summer family get-togethers. Our Frenchy trips along the French Shore will be remembered with much laughter and fondness. Mom, mamma, Ma, Grammie… your life was a shining example and blessing to us all. Well done! Rest in Peace. Augusta is survived by her children, E. Susan Jamieson (Greg), Dell (Linda), Mary Allen (Edward), Jeremy (Ida), Garth (Heather), Angela Stanley (Charles), Joseph (Ann Marie); grandchildren, Marcus, Matthew, Sibbyl, Michael, Ruth, David, Andrew, Julia, Nigel, Harrison, Talli, Jane, Joseph; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Hartley; sister, Grace Nickerson; and brother, George Newell. There will be no visitation. Her funeral service with be held at H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, at 2 pm, Friday, March 31 with Pastor Derek Melanson officiating. The service will be webcasted for those unable to attend. Interment to follow at the Old Kirk Cemetery, with family only. Reception to follow at the home of Mary and Edward Allen, Wickens Lane, Centreville, CSI. A special thanks to Mom’s caregivers over the last several years especially those at Meadows Clover Wing. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Diabetes Association of Canada.
