With deepest sorrow and much love, we mourn the death of our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Athina Proikakis who passed away peacefully on March 25, 2023 at the age of 82 years old.She will be remembered by her loving husband of 59 years, Vrahionis, devoted children Tom (Cathy), Angela, and son-in-law Alex, her cherished and adored grandchildren Stella, Athena, Sophie, Eleni, Mia, Melina, Leonidas, and her brother George (Irene). She will be held dear in the hearts of her nieces, nephews and many friends. Athina is now reunited with her beloved daughter Maria, son-in-law Matthew, and siblings Kosta, Despina, Panayiotis, Matenia, Demetrios and Chrisoula. Athina was born in Thrace, Greece in 1940 to Theodore and Stavroula. Although the political unrest of the Greek Civil War served as the backdrop to her youth, Athina would often recall her childhood with her seven siblings with great fondness. In 1964 Athina married Vrahionis and they went on to move to Heilbronn, Germany where they welcomed their son. In 1972 they moved to Toronto be close to her siblings. They would go on to welcome their daughters and raise their family in the west end of the city. Athina was an authentic, beautiful, kind and gentle soul, she loved all unconditionally. She had a quick wit and sharp sense of humour as well as an affinity for reality tv and all things pop culture. Weekends in her Junction home were often marked with visits from her siblings, nieces and nephews, whom she loved to host. Athina firmly believed that all of life’s dilemmas could be solved with a good Greek home cooked meal. She loved to cook and bake and share her wonderful offerings of tsoureki and tyropita with friends and neighbours. Life would present its challenges but Athina accepted them all head on. From her fight with breast cancer to the insurmountable loss of her beloved daughter, Athina’s strength and perseverance helped to guide her family through hardships. She served as inspiration to many and always had words of encouragement for those who needed them. Despite the hardships she overcame, she was, and will continue to be, an inspiration to her family and all those who knew her.
Athina’s greatest and most treasured role in her life was that of Yiayia. She loved her seven grandchildren fiercely as each brought her immeasurable joy. She exuded unrelenting pride and love at the mere mention of their names. She taught them the importance of being strong, patient and considerate, to think positively when challenged, and to never lose sight of their dreams.
Visitation will take place at St. Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church (11323 Warden Avenue, north of Elgin Mills Rd), on Friday March 31, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass which will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Elgin Mills Cemetery (1591 Elgin Mills Road East,at Leslie Street).
