It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Art Russell on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023 after a short stay at the Bonavista Hospital. He was born and raised in Port Union and continued to raise a family and live there for most of his 86 years.
Art was known for many things, one being his family of girls; all of whom he adored and loved! He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his beloved wife of 63 years, Edith (Moulton) Russell and their four daughters, Cathy Ward (Ki) of St. John’s, NL, Janet Russell of Toronto, ON, Sherry Daigle (Claude) of Red Lake, ON and Lisa Russell (Chris Barker) of Toronto, ON. He will never be forgotten by those who knew him as Pop or Poppy: granddaughters, Lori Barton (Ben) of Rusagonis, NB and Jasmine Fiddler of Red Lake, ON and great granddaughter, Ayla Barton of Rusagonis, NB. He also leaves to mourn, brother, Doug (Gert); sister-in-law, Ibena as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.
Besides his parents, Samual and Sarah Russell he was predeceased by siblings and in-laws: Eli, Bob (Juanita), Melina (Vic), Edgar and Rebecca.
Art, above all else, loved to have his family and friends around. Whether it was having his family home for a visit in the summer, enjoying his greenhouse and gardens, taking rides up on the road looking for moose, or out in Doug’s store with the «round the river» crew, he was happy. He loved to work, whether for wages at the fishplant, digging in the garden or welding on the basement stairs, he enjoyed it. He was the happiest sharing the fruits of his labours with family and friends, sometimes in the form of tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, potatoes, pumpkins, moose, wine, whatever he had, he shared with all those around him. We also all know, he loved a good prank! Sometimes he was the prankster and other times he was the recipient. Either way, he appreciated a good laugh. Many a trick he pulled and many more he took the blame for, but all in honour of side splitting laughter!
The family cannot express how appreciative they are to everyone who has been so kind, not only in the last few weeks, but throughout Art’s sickness. To all of you who have provided food, warm hugs and thoughtful prayers, we can never thank you enough, we are so very grateful. The kindness offered to us at the Bonavista hospital by many staff members will also never be forgotten. It is wonderful to be supported by so many wonderful people, we are so blessed!
Art’s wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of his life will be at a later date.
