Passed away on January 5th 2023 after a long and extraordinary life of nearly 102 years, Arthur Boyles Inkpen of Clarenville. Born in Lewin’s Cove on January 12th, 1921, Arthur defied the odds from the very beginning and carried on doing so until his final days. If you sat down to write all the stories of his life, you’d end up with a tapestry of adventure, heroism, and hilarity. Always humble about his accomplishments, Arthur was straightforward and wry, witty, and loving, and that is how his family, friends, and loved ones will remember him.
A veteran of World War II (59th Regiment), Arthur was one of the founding charter members of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Clarenville Branch and spent much of his life as an active member, holding positions in both Clarenville and Labrador City. A lifelong mechanic and lover of driving all manner of vehicles, Arthur could drive, handle, and fix with the best and when he finally gave up his license at 97, he figured that was long enough to be behind the wheel.
Predeceased by loving wife Pearl (nee Hollett), parents William and Lucinda, sister Mabel and brothers Kyle, Jack, Leonard, Eugene, Gerald, and son-in-law Dennis Taverner. Left to mourn with loving memories are sons Robert (Marilyn) and Gordon (Brenda), and daughter Valerie; grandchildren Carolyn, Jill (Dean), Peter (Allison), Wendy (Deon), Sara (Anthony), Andrew (Amanda), and Stephen (Leslie-Ann); great-grandchildren Jack, Isabella, Lexie, Luke, Ryan, Liam, and Cole, along with many other family members and friends far and wide.
Arthur’s family would like to extend their profound thanks to the incredible staff at Clarenville Retirement Centre for their diligence and care during his time there. They are especially grateful for the many years Gail Bailey provided home support and continuing care for Arthur after his move to the Centre. She went above and beyond, and it showed.
Arthur never liked a sad goodbye, and so we say with a smile: “See ya later, alligator.”
Donations in Arthur’s memory may be made to Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 27 (Clarenville).
Visitation will be held at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville, on Sunday, January 8th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held at Fewer’s Memorial Chapel on Monday, January 9th at 2pm with interment to follow at the United Cemetery, Palmers Lane, Shoal Harbour. Please note that masks will be required for both visitation and funeral service.
